The 1,388 ft figure comes from the DOB, which is likely the roof height. Mechanical equipment on the roof will likely be hidden by a parapet of some type, which would extend the height further. But until we have diagrams from the DOB, or official renderings are released, we just won’t know for sure.

JPMorgan suffers setback in return to office
Employees sent home from Madison Avenue building after worker tests positive for Covid-19

TRD New York
September 15, 2020

Quote:
The bank alerted employees on Sunday that a worker on the fifth floor of the company’s 383 Madison Avenue building had been infected, Bloomberg News reported. The communication came less than a week after JPMorgan told some employees in the sales and trading divisions to prepare to return to the Madison Avenue building by Sept. 21.

A spokesperson for JPMorgan told Bloomberg the bank could not comment on any one case, but said the company has been “managing individual cases across the firm over the course of the last few months and following appropriate protocols when they occur.”

Company CEO Jamie Dimon has been going into the office since June, and more JPMorgan employees have been slowly returning to the workplace since Labor Day. But this recent interruption highlights the challenges banks and other companies face as they look to return to the office after months of working from home.

It means I don't know and won't know for sure what it is until I see a diagram or renderings are released.

This particular view of Vanderbilt should be around for a couple of years. The rising 270 Park will eventually block this angle.

Now that the lowrise tower is down to grade, the portion that contains the area not above the tracks, I was thinking we would be moving to excavation. But I don't know why I was thinking that. Excavation was done decades ago.

I thought they were only enhancing the foundations on the railyard portions of the site, but it looks like they will be reusing the foundation on this portion as well.

But it looks like there will be openings cut into the sub-cellar levels four new columns...

The shaded areas (on the left) are the cut out areas of those basement floors...

So it doesn't look like we will get a full reveal of any new foundation. We'll just go from demolition to grade, then we'll see the new building begin to rise.

They've had to do foundation work through the new LIRR eastside access concorse...

Is that liable to speed up construction on the new tower? Seems interesting how they can mostly reuse the same foundations for a building practically twice as tall.

If this is accurate, this tower could possibly start rising in 2021. That’s amazing.

I love these New York sites with a tangled web of active transit and infrastructure that they have to deal with but I'm sure it's a nightmare for the engineers and architects. A fun nightmare.

Well, they've actually been working on that already. So, in that sense, the tower is already under construction, just not visible to us. They've been under time constraint to get that completed, because that portion of the new LIRR terminal was completed by the MTA. But because of the column placement, JP Morgan had to go in and do that all over, at a significant cost.

The plan was always for 270 to start rising next year, but they had the added push of getting out of the MTA's way. Foundation work is supposed to be complete by the end of June next year. Also one of the reasons there was still some construction on site during the pandemic shut down.

One of the older permits...

Yeah, this tower is not only being built over the upper level tracks, but the LIRR concourse as well. You have to squeeze as much infrastructure as you can, where you can in these dense neighborhoods. The Grand Hyatt tower will be another complicated project.

Grand Central Terminal Train Shed Nearing Construction

By MARC BUSSANICH
September 30, 202

Quote:
Metro-North officials provided an update yesterday to Community Board 6’s Land Use and Waterfront Committee on the progress of the necessary repairs to Grand Central Terminal’s Train Shed, which despite several years of repairs, necessitates a more comprehensive and aggressive approach to prevent steel corrosion.

The GCT Train Shed is Metro-North’s most important asset as nearly all the trains on the system either start or end there.

The $2 billion project, expected to last almost 20 years, seeks to restore the waterproofing membrane, which is essential to protecting the asset.

The train shed is the underground rail yard north of Grand Central Terminal, which starts at East 43rd Street and stretches from Madison Avenue to Lexington Avenue, and then north up to East 50th Street, where it tapers down and continues to East 57th Street.
Quote:
While priority repairs have been ongoing, according to Daly, the actual work on the train shed is set to commence in 2021 into two phases. Sector 1 includes East 47th and East 48th Streets, while Sector 2, covering work along East 53rd Street to East 55th Street, is currently in the design phase and work will commence with the launch of the MTA’s next capital plan starting in 2025.

The work at East 47th and East 48th Streets will be happening simultaneously as JP Morgan Chase is set to begin construction at 270 Park Avenue of its new 1,425 feet tower that is expected to be one of the city’s largest office buildings, totaling 2.5 million square feet.

All of them tall buildings you get to look at everyday. I would be very happy to have a 500 or 600 footer in my vicinity. It is getting to be very possible very soon.

A 500 footer in the right location can be like a 1,000 footer. Hope it happens.

More on the train shed reconstruction, and JP Morgan's role. They've already commited $25 million to that particular project. It will happen during construction of the tower, so there will be as little disruption as possible.
