Car registration and Insurance

Another question about St. John's. Not house features this time.

Say I was a 22 year old female and just bought a car for... Say $1500. And no real driving record (Novice class 5).

Any idea what I would have to pay for insurance? Is NL government insurance or private? Do they let you pay monthly?

You can pay monthly, and it's private. Was said 22-year-old with no driving record on an auto insurance plan for any length of time? The longer the better.

I won't lie: auto insurance in St. John's is expensive. When I was under 25 years old, with no accident history, and having been licensed and insured since I was 17, I was paying about 125/month for 3rd party liability (1 million), and that was way before the increase on insurance tax which was implemented by the current government. After the age of 25, and up to now, I am paying about 90 a month for the same liability only insurance, as a 28-year-old with a clean driving record.

Unfortunately she hasn't been on any auto insurance plan. This will be completely new.

I guess she'll have to seriously consider whether a car is worth the expense.

Thanks.

This is an odd topic to have its own thread.

As expensive as it is, St. John's is a very car-dependent city, and the public transit leaves a lot to be desired. If a car can be squeezed into the budget, I would highly suggest doing so.

I really don't know why this is a thread.

Go to the Canada sub-forum and ask that same question about almost every thread.
