2 involved in apparent stabbings mum, RNC investigate

Police in St. John's continue to investigate two apparent stabbings that occurred in St. John's on Saturday.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a call for assistance around 4 p.m. Saturday, regarding a man in the Goodview Street area who was bleeding.

Shortly after receiving the first call, the RNC responded to another call about a man who was bleeding.

When officers arrived to the second scene on Cabot Street, the man was holding a knife.

RNC said there was indication that a third person was involved.

However, police said neither of the men wanted to provide any further detail about the incidents.

One man suffered a minor injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, but the other man was treated on the scene by paramedics and refused to go to hospital.

RNC continue to investigate, and it is unknown if there are any arrests pending.

Impaired drivers keep police busy

Meanwhile, a 26-year-old woman was charged with impaired driving following a collision on Pitts Memorial Drive Saturday night.

The accident happened just before 10:30 p.m.

Police said the driver was charged with impaired causing bodily harm and refusal.

The accused was released from custody to appear in court at a later date.

RNC responded to a hit-and-run collision earlier Saturday afternoon in the Stavanger Drive area.

Police said the collision happened around 4:30 p.m.

Shortly after receiving the call, officers located the suspect vehicle near St. Thomas's Line.

A 40-year-old man was charged with impaired driving, and was detained at the lockup for a court appearance Sunday morning.

Police impounded the man's vehicle.

Inmates Part of 'St. John's Mob'

Quote:

A group of criminals serving time at Her Majesty's Penitentiary are identifying themselves as a gang and are now publicly referring to themselves as the St. John's Mob. As a group of 14 were paraded into court this week accused at various levels for their involvement in a February riot at HMP, two of the men made reference to the mob - Philip Pynn, who is in jail awaiting trial for the July 2011 shooting death of his then-friend Nick Winsor and Justin Wiseman, who is incarcerated serving time for a standoff on Springdale Street last year.

RNC Superintendent Jason Sheppard says police and corrections officers have been aware of the organization for about eight months. Sheppard wouldn't specify how many people are involved but he did say all are well known to police.

He says when you look at prisons around the country it's not uncommon to have gangs, calling it a situation that develops inside institutions. Sheppard says it's one thing to have a gang operate within an institution but it's entirely different once they are operating in the city. He says St. John's hasn't had any street gangs, just small pockets of criminals working together, but this is different.

Sheppard says there's a difference between a street gang and a motorcycle gang. Central Newfoundland is home to the Bacchus biker gang and the Outlaws. Last summer police acknowledged that gang activity could have been to blame for a firebombing on Hamilton Avenue and a drive-by shooting on Dauntless Street.

Sheppard says there is a group in the capital city that refer to themselves as a motorcycle gang.

He says for years St. John's has been visited by motorcycle gangs from across the country, but he says it's not that St. John's doesn't have any motorcycle gangs; it's just that they haven't opened a headquarters.

Superintendent Sheppard says the RNC is ready in the event the gang activity spills out onto the streets of St. John's. Police are committed to putting all available resources into combatting organized crime.

He says it's one thing for people to make poor choices and get involved in crime, and entirely different when they organize and make a concerted effort to jeopardize public safety.

Despite Some Extreme Examples, Crime Down in Metro

Quote:
It may not feel like it, but crime is down significantly in the metro region. Drive-by shootings, firebombings and unsolved murders and missing persons seem to frequently to make headlines, but the new chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says the numbers show a different story.

Chief Bill Janes says break and entry is down 25 per cent in metro, car theft has dropped by 19 per cent and violent crime is down by seven per cent.

That said, there have been several high profile violent crimes, but Janes said most citizens don't have anything to worry about.

If I remember I should post a link to stats Canada CMA crime numbers between 2013 and 1990, as well as the RNC jurisdiction stats. It might not seem that way thanks to the media, but crime has been steady in the city for quite a while.

The only notable increase are firearms offenses. People think guns are a new thing to St. John's, but the stats would indicate they've been around for a while, but have slightly increased in prevalence in the past few years.
