Is that parkade going to serve all three buildings?

Yup, thats the only reason why the other two buildings are feasible, for years the MIX building wasn't developed because of the parking requirements, but now that it can go in the garage, they can turn the other two buildings into condos

Excellent. Then I forgive any complaints I have about the parkade and am still glad it was built. I do wish, however, that the condos weren't set back as far. Of the three buildings, the one on top of the parkade is the only one I have any design complaints about.

Speaking of parking, the city desperately needs to address the need for a large parkade in downtown.

It's obviously on a much smaller scale, but finding parking in St. John's is harder than just about any other city in Canada. At least in the larger centres such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, etc you can generally always get parking if you want to pay a premium, whereas it can sometimes be literally impossible to get a spot in downtown, and the problem is only going to get much worse. I can't count how many times I've tried to go out for lunch, or meet co-workers for drinks, and have seriously circled the three main roads downtown for 15 minutes only to give up trying for a spot.

Perhaps this should be a thread of its on, but does anyone have any suggestions on a location in downtown for a large public parkade? How far down underground can they drill (and is it even feasible given the solid granite I assume is underground in most downtown).

I think it's a symptom of suburban sprawl and rural expectations. Everyone drives downtown and everyone is coming from little towns where they can park right in front of their destinations.

This prevents us from creating viable alternatives, like park-and-rides or public transit.

I, for one, don't think we need a large parade downtown. A large section of 351 is going to be public parking, and I believe a portion of Metropark is also going to be public parking. And I agree with signal, we should be discouraging people from using cars by improving public transit.

As noted by the previous poster, there are two new parkades already under construction and will include some public parking and should make a great deal of difference.
351 will have a 446-car parkade, including 246 public parking spaces, and the Henry Bell parkade is supposed to have at least 384 stalls.
Quote:
The project will provide approximately 169 parking spaces for the condominiums as well as approximately 215 for public use.
Quote from the Henry Bell Land use Assesment report.

So, unless this has changed, that's a total of 461 new public parking spaces in these two parkades.

Condos for Sale

VOCM, Nov 7, 2012

Quote:
Renovations to the building are not yet complete, but Henry Bell Developments has already launched its sales campaign for the new MARCONI condominiums located in the old CBC building between Duckworth and Henry Streets. The building houses 50 residential units and two commercial units. Renovations are expected to be completed sometime next year. The development is part of a series of projects planned for the west end of Duckworth Street. They include a 416-stall parking facility and a seven- storey condominium development in the old Newfoundland Telephone Building.

Interesting, it states these units will be ready by next year, not sure if the parking garage will be completed by then though... hopefully!

I've recently been in discussions with the realtors selling the Marconi condos and received a pdf brochure and a price list.

The brochure pretty much contains floor plans and other info that can be found here:

http://condosmarconi.com/

I was surprised to find that 40% of the Marconi condos are already sold.

Is anyone privy to any work currently being completed on Mix and Marconi projects. There must be some work going on inside these buildings as there is nothing going on on the outside. Work must be started if they plan on opening them next year.

The ground level of the Marconi was recently boarded up. Before it was just (cracked) glass.

It looks as if there's still quite a bit of work left with the parking garage. Judging by the renderings the parking garage will extend further east on Duckworth. So it looks as if only half of it is currently being constructed.

Yeah, are they working on the inside of these buildings?? There is no way they will even be close to ready by next year if they haven't started yet. They have to build to large portions onto MIX. they haven't started but they still say it will be opened next year? They better get an early start in the spring!!!
