Considering I lived there, this is biased, but I must say Madrid. It is underrated, full of quirky people, and has amazing energy.

Berlin is a close 2nd.

Stockholm wins 3rd for uncanny beauty.

As an American who visited Dublin, London, Oxford, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Paris, it was without a doubt that my favorite was the latter. I'm not sold in everything French, but for a backpacker like me it felt like it was worth every penny and more.

Favourite big City

Paris; Architecture, ambience, cinema, theatre, etc etc. Just unrivalled.

Favourite small city:

Cambridge England. Must be the most beautiful university town in Europe. beautifully to scale and clearly full of young people adding life. Marvellous athmospheric high street with great coffee and book stores. Lovely square. Superb colleges especially Trinity and kings.

Munich: It's pretty, it's fun, it's a mangeable size and it has decent public transportation accessible to tourists.
