They put up an elevator today. The workers won't have to climb to the top now.

The complex is visible from the sidewalk when walking down Portage Avenue... it's cool to see, it adds a bit of depth to the skyline.

They've waited this long for that?

Anyone know when we'll start to see work begin on cityplace to get ready for the skywalk attachment to TNS? Will it wait until Tower 2 is done since it's going to connect both?

I would expect it to be near the end of the project as the area it will be going over is the loading area for the project and may be in the way of any loads that require the tower crane to lift them up.

A couple photos from the south. You can see the lift installed along Hargrave. Also shows what they're doing with the cheap wall along the church side.

I think if anything, the choice of finishing on the church side just shows that TN is fully aware of the church's future plans to build a new complex there. I'd say it's a good sign.

I'm inclined to agree. It's likely that if there is any movement on the Archdiocese's project, that Longboat/TNSE is fully plugged in and supportive.

(I guess we'll find out exactly how tall that building is going to be judging by where the wall stops?)

Leading theories on the shitty wall:

1. They cheaped out
2. It's the St. Mary's Church thing.
3. There is no other theory.

So it must be the church thing.

I got one. The wall is on the lot line so building and fire codes makes it very expensive to put openings like windows in it.

^ A reasonable theory... but if so, how high would you have to go with the solid wall?

Interesting... if you look at the renderings, there was still a gap between TNS and the cathedral's property, and glass all the way up. However, TNS has actually been built mere inches away from cathedral property...so no glass on the south elevation? An interesting change in plans, but I can't see why it would be done if it weren't in anticipation of development on the adjacent site.

hopefully the cladding will be glass on the south side and not a blank brick wall.

It just seems like a super cheap solution. It's not even brick, It's steel studs with whatever some type of insulation. We'll see what happens.

But yes, no windows on the property line make sense.

I have a hard time imagining that they'd just put in that plain jane wall and call it a day... surely there would at least be some sort of veneer placed over top to make that side look consistent with the rest of the tower?

As buzzg pointed out, though, it's a good sign regarding the neighbouring proposal if TN rejigged their own development in anticipation of it.
