I also seem to remember a restaurant called Waldo's (or something like that) right next to it.
That video is an absolute gem.

Old commercials

Some CKCK-TV commercials from the 1980s... with annotations!

Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4edBmKoB3fc

Part 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHfOK-ncEUY

Part 5 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlkrCZwCXxE

The scary thing is that I remember seeing most of these when I was younger.

I remember when this thread was still receiving updates. Maybe this will kick-start it again, LOL.

I just started a new job. I have been told our main office is the old "Hollywoods" building. Is this even possible? I remember when it was open but wasn't quite old enough to go. It seems to me it was torn down...but a couple of the long time employees have told me it IS "Hollywoods". Does anyone remember what happened to it before the new Canadian Tire was built?

Also...where was Prairie Lanes in relation to Hollywoods? I can't for the life of me remember how that was situated...with the mini-golf beside it too. Anyone have any old pictures of the lot?

Yes, Hollywoods was located at the present-day Canadian Tire (north). Your friends are in error about that for I was 23 (in 1989) when I frequented that "establishment". I don't remember where Prairie Lanes were, but it seems to me that it was located within the same block(?). Also, there used to be a Smitty's (directly accross the street from Seven Oakes). Moreover yet, located accross Cdn Tire, there was a country bar called Gillies(?) And before Gillies, there was an AMC dealership called Macton Motors. I know THAT for a fact 'cause that is where my mother purchased a '73 Gremlin!!!

All of these preceded the present-day Toys 'R Us.

I posted this note quite awhile ago, but not in this thread...here is my recollection of that portion of Albert Street:

And going further down Albert the current Crestview Chrysler site was the original Canadian Tire location. Across the street was a large group of buildings that included the old Crestview location, the Hollywood's building (they used to hold dinner theatres in the back half of that same building), the bowling alley, a second shortlived car dealer (Woodcrest Motors I believe) and the original Burger Baron. This may belong in the "I remember" thread but I recall in the early 90's that whole parking lot being a gathering spot when the bar closed. We'd go to Hollywood's and then wait for Sevens to clear out and the street fighting to start!
Someone mentioned the Toys R Us site across the street...it had the Mandarin Restaurant (first dim sum I ever tried), and upstairs was a bar...Albert Albert's until about '87...and then a short life as a country bar, (North 40 I believe).
And yes, I too am old!!!

Don't forget Palisades Park. And wasn't there a little Pic-A-Pop store as well?

I should have been a little more clear with my question. I know where Hollywoods was...but the co-workers claim the building was MOVED to where our main office is. It does kinda look like the same place too...but it seems way too big to move. The front juts out like I seem to recall and there was a big chandelier in the front window. The only difference is there are no big pillars.

Hollywoods IS gone though - I witnessed them tear it down.

THAT'S RIGHT!!!!!! It was Albert Albert's and North 40 --- thanks!!! Where was Gillies?

The Sahara (Scary) Nights was in the Avon Shopping Centre. 'watched a bulldozer destroy it back in '92.

I guess I'm getting up there too.

Gillies' Ranch was also in the Avon Shopping Centre. See the commercial in one of the above-linked videos:

I was searching the Google Leader-Post Archives online and came across this doozie from Aug 1982. SCROLL UP to see picture. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...wer+post&hl=en
And WOW, i know it's a bad picture but the proposed tower looks completely different in the following link from Jan 1982!

What ever happened to this old street car in Scarth Street Mall? I thought it looked so cool. Why did they get rid of it? http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...tre+post&hl=en

AWESOME posting!!! I actually remember that newspaper story!!! They eventually built the twin for the model Paul Hill is standing beside. If you look at it closely, the point at the bottom of the "slice" is actually higher off street level [since it is 22-storeys vs. the present-day 20] --- in order to maintain the same angle.

I was speaking about this with Spongebob the other day of the fact that CKTV [as CKCK-TV was called during the early '80s] used both of these models for a station promotional interlude. Between late 1983 'til late 1984, I (we) watched this interlude called "Putting on the Hits!" which included the promotion of these towers --- in their original form while slowly turning on a "turntable-like" device. I'd do anything to see that again ---- and so would all of you!!! The photograph of that single tower may not look a lot different than what we have downtown today, but I guarantee you, whenever that interlude was broadcast ---- those twins looked quite impressive [since their proportions were taller and leaner in appearance. They would have been the Saskatchewan chapter of the World Trade Centre.

When I heard that they reduced the height from 90 metres down to 79 --- I was damn-near heartbroken.

I've always wondered that myself! I remember seeing it when I was a kid, then it was gone.

BTW, thanks for the link to the newspaper archives. I never knew you could do that with Google. It's like a gold mine!

A woman referring to the kids watching the demolition:

By the time they are our ages, they may be knocking buildings down with lasers or something.
I love it.

She was probably thinking of "One Froggy Evening."

Somewhere on tape I have video of the implosion. I believe that video also made it into the above mentioned CKCK promo.
