They're discussing it again today at the HDRC's meeting.

Also of interest, looks like HEB donated (plans to donate $1 mil/5 years) $5 million. AT&T has pledged $5 million, Tobin Endowment $15 million, McCombs $1 million, and Frost pledged $250K.

The foundation is raising the remaining $54 million in private funds. So far, about $28 million has been pledged from nearly 20 private donors, Smith said.

Because it's "wrong?"
Oh jeez.... get over it.

If she thinks that saving the facade isn't enough, then I would hate for her to see what they did to the Fort Sam Houston Theatre.... glad nothing "historical" happened there for her and her family.

btw: all they did to the FSH Theatre is put a big white box behind it... and it cost over $17 million.

She's spearing heading a legal challenge and is hoping to raise 20,000 dollars via emails to friends?

I suppose one of her friends is the woman who wrote that little piece hoping it would get some city wide attention but it won't get any attention.

This isn't Corpus Christi, her and her little group aren't stopping this with cheap and uninspired cries of "it's not right" or "think of the children." lol

I'm glad to see that someone is trying to save the MA from demolition. I hope she succeeds.

I wish they were saving more of the old building as well, but legally she doesn't have very much to go on. There's no law about saving old buildings because someone thinks "it's not right".

I feel this is the same argument of lets save something cause its old oh but btw it will sit there and do nothing vs. tear it down and put something useful there but it will be new.

Granted I can understand the notion of wanting to preserve the historic building. However if there was really a genuine concern for the building then some sort of action should have been taken on it years ago.

I like what they are doing with MA. Cant wait to see construction start on it...

This building was almost destroyed by fire in 1979. How much is really left from 1926?

Old has little to do with my argument. Originally I was well on board when I heard about a MA remodel, but then it turns into a demolition. I'm not understanding the logic behind this. The plan is to tear down a perfectly good 5000 seat auditorium and replace it with a 2500 seat theater. This makes no sense to me. Location cannot be the argument, costs cannot be the argument. (I think that the lot across from the Museum Of Art would have been a better location - on the riverwalk, by the highways, close to Pearl Development. I've made this argument before that Houston's Center cost $92 million in 2002). The city could still spend some money towards that river entrance and a parking garage. As far as concern for the building, there is nothing wrong with the auditorium exept that it is underutilized. So, it will be torn down, leaving the city without a mid-sized venue. Oh wait, the Alamodome has configured a mid range venue to fill the void. That doesn't make sense to me either, I bet it costs alot more to operate the dome.
I'm excited when I look at the design for the Tobin; i think its pretty damn good. And I know that if this comes to fruition, I'll learn to love it. But I just had to vent

Moving right along. Nice pics, Kevin. I like the artistic crane technique shot at the end.

Thanks, guys. I have more photos to post that I'm working on. I also got some photos of the public art that was posted up along the construction barriers around the Tobin Center.

Propose title change to

Tobin Center | x Feet | U/C

Can someone fill in the height of the new construction? This is actually a lot taller than I was expecting. I didn't realize we would be able to see the penthouse so prominently from the highway.

It is pretty tall. The nearby El Tropicano Hotel Riverwalk is 136 feet tall, and it appears to be about the same height.

The El Tropicano Hotel is the white one in the center of the photo.

Here are a few more photos I took on July 13.

I snapped a quick photo of the front this morning. They've started excavation work for the plaza/amphitheater along the river.

Not sure if I love it, but it's certainly not horrible. Thanks for posting the photo, WorldTexas.
