SA: City to Tunnel Medical Drive

City Council moves forward with proposed Medical Drive tunnel

Those who drive through the intersection of Medical Drive and Fredericksburg Road know how slow it is — but not for long.

On Thursday, the San Antonio City Council approved funding that will lead to a tunnel being dug under Fredericksburg Road and into the Medical Center.

"It will help emergency vehicles move quickly in this area," said Diane Cibrian, councilwoman for District 8. "We know the medical center is expanding rapidly."

Voters have already approved funding the project in two previous bond elections. It's estimated to cost $26 million to widen Medical Drive to four lanes and take it under Fredericksburg Road.

The proposed tunnel will streamline all traffic, not just traffic for emergency vehicles.

"We are such an incredible economic generator for our city. With 27,000 just medical employees, forgetting all those who earn their living through the service businesses in the Medical Center," said Susan Wright, with the Medical Center Alliance.

On Thursday, the city authorized funding to begin phase two of the project, studying the environmental impact and acquiring the right of way to add two lanes to Medical Drive before workers can start tunneling.

Start and end dates for the project are dependent on how long it takes to acquire the right of ways, so it could be a few years before traffic can zip into the Medical Center.

Cool. There aren't many tunnels in Texas, none in Austin, and I think only Dallas has some? Am I right?

26 million sounds a little low. I do like tunnels, they are fun to drive through...

Dallas has two that I can think of off the top of my head. One is where Spring Valley rd. goes under North Central Expressway in Richardson. The other is a toll road that goes under the Addison Airport.

It works out since medical is on a hill east of fred. The only thing im wondering is how will it be setup for people who need to turn onto fred? And i also where the tunnel will "re appear" on the othe west side of fred..

We need to get TexHwyMan on here ASAP, his awesomeness has been wasted on the City-Data forums long enough.

It is technically not a Tunnel. It is a grade separation, thus the name of the project, Medical Dr Grade Separation. They are going to cut into the hillside then close Fredericksburg in phases as they construct a bridge across the depressed Medical Drive.

Looks like the type of flythrough that most roundabouts in DC have .
Great news though.

It looks like Aurora in Seattle.

Well, the lower part toward downtown. The one without the pawn shops and quick-stop motels.

This is a underpass.
Medical Drive is simply becoming a highway for about a half mile stretch.
Tunnel I think is the wrong word in this case. Market Street downtown is
more of a tunnel by the Alamodome then this stretch of road.
This area really needs this, and there are probably several other locations in this city that could use this type of intersection. (Fredricksburg and Wurzbach, Babcock and Wurzbach, Commerce and General McMullen, Broadway and Hildabrand, Huebner and Bandera, Callaghan and Babcock, Military and Pleasonton ?)

If anyone needs highway questions, I'm not texas highway man, but I feel that I'm very equal for any highway questions.

It does look like a underpass, which basically serves the same purpose whether it's barely covered or fully covered. It's something that road needed. Hopefully like TM said, more of these are added at other locations.
