Because very few if anyone in Austin would be willing to pay the very high dollar per sq ft that comes with the price to build said starchitecture. So I guess curved, round, or heavily angled designs won't happen here anytime soon. For me, adding notches, texture, stacking and maybe an offset to a box doesn't do much to improve the box. And claiming adoration for height and density over anything else is a weak reason to concede to the reality. We are a 2nd tier city. We are lucky to be getting some decent buildings, ie: Indeed, Sail, possibly 5C, Republic...

Here's what I do like. The height, added density to the neighborhood, color, facade texture, and the vertical accents.

What I don't like. The shape and clumsy stacking and overhang.

It just feels like someone needed a bunch of space so they stacked some boxes to achieve it. This thing will be huge and prominent. Austin can do better.

Yes. According to the GaWC, New York & London are the tops of "tier 1" (or Alpha) cities. Both are the only ones given an Alpha++ ranking.

Since 2018, Austin has risen in the rankings from the middle of "tier 3" (The Gammas - ranked: Gamma) to the bottom of "tier 2" (or Beta) cities. GaWC gave Austin the rating of Beta- for 2020. Other cities receiving the Beta- score for 2020 are: Wuhan, Manchester, Geneva, Osaka, Calgary, Xiamen, Tampa, Minneapolis, San Diego, St. Petersburg (RU), Lagos, Quito, Edinburgh, Lahore, Hyderabad, and Jeddah. Pretty solid company!

If this gets built to its current design, I'm never going to unsee this (credit: eguidry):

We'll have The Nose Clippers, The Sail, The Molar, The Jenga and now The Shoebill...

This is not going to be built as proposed.

Oh frick, my page didn't re-load all new posts....

In re to NYC tower comparsion:
Agreed! Well, I agree with Syndic as well. Being critical & ambitious has brought us to where we're at today in such a short period of time. In a lot of ways I even think this forum has aided in the development and tweaking of some projects.

....But NYC is a different beast for sure lol. Oh damn... my constant suggestion here: what IF this had a large spire on top?! Can someone photoshop plz??? I'll have a beer sent to you

In re to the inanimate object comparisons for our buildings:
Y'all....I hate hate HAAAAAATE that. I know it's in jest and I'm being playful here, but it just makes me feel like our skyline/architecture needs to be made in to a children's story book.

If this building were slender, it would work.

That would be so tight. Imagine the heights it could reach

You seem to be the only true fan of this building right now. Haha

I wanna like it. I mean, I do. But I do agree that there could be more done with this building. Honestly though. This reminds me of something from Houston.

I know, lol. I suppose I'm kinda sleeping on it a little because this will very likely change before it becomes the real deal.... I am just a sucker for brutalist design and darker glass.

Also, there is a lot I love about Houston architecture!! It's very 80's, boxy and classy!

I definitely see that. It also reminds me of a Lego animal made by a three-year-old.

I think I'd like this more if it wasn't facing the waterfront. Maybe if it were a further up north, getting lost somewhere in between the skyline. I think it would definitely work better there. It would also help make the skyline look more bulky and filled in.

FOR SURE! That is a super prominent place in the skyline. I really hope it gets some design tweaks

Frankly, I'd rather have that ugly stork-duck, supersized and put on display on that lot. At least it has softer edges. Or maybe they could do a total re-design from top to bottom, or nothing at all. Tweaking the design would take some serious tweak, I mean like mega tweaking, perhaps even revolutionary, never been done before on an enormous scale requiring international co-operation from design teams and engineers from around the world working around the clock for years to find a solution that would make this current design even slightly more aesthetically pleasing. But that's just my thoughts...

It's really not on the waterfront though. It is only so visible in that limited view angle because there is a lot of low-rise stuff around the convention center. Once some of that gets infilled with taller buildings, the waterfront view will not seem so prominent.
