Wow, you sure know how to win a debate with the old "we have an NHL team and you don't" argument.

Winnipeg has a longer skating trail than Ottawa. Deal with it and move on.

Like I said, Thunder Bay (the city, not the bay) should just turn Thunder Bay (the bay, not the city) into a gigantic hockey rink and this whole thing will be over. They already have plans to create about 65kms of ice paths along it in winter, and I'm sure you'd be able to skate on it. So, we'd have you beat in both areas!

Aside from that, we have both a slow river like the Red (Kaministiquia) and a fast river like the Ottawa (Current) so there!!

At least we still have our CFL team. A Grey Cup contender at that.

With a high of zero for the weekend I wonder how busy the Rideau will be?

It's gonna be -42 with windchill over the next few days in the 'Peg. Perfect weather for skating on the world's longest and perhaps best outdoor rink.

Are you sure about that? Sounds like you might need hip waders if you try skating the Rideau on Friday.

Actually that would be pretty awesome, but I think the river ice is too rough for such a contest.

I have no doubt that the skating season will begin for January 30th or earlier. The ice is thick enough now (>25cm) to support the weight of any maintenance trucks etc., but they like to be extra careful and wait for >30cm to open up the canal officially to the public. With 5 straight days of bitter cold (not Winnipeg cold) weather coming up things should be just fine.

P.S. I'm willing to race anyone at any skating distance and for any reason you can come up with .
