The City of San Antonio and CPS Energy released a report Friday outlining a broad-based strategy aimed at developing sustainable energy in the Alamo City.

The report calls for the city and the utility to take steps to invest in new, decentralized forms of energy. This will mean more of an investment in renewable energy; the development of buildings that generate their own power; hydrogen storage of renewable energy; and smart grids and plug-in vehicles.

Bexar County plans to invest in downtown solar-energy system
San Antonio Business Journal

Bexar County Commissioners Court is close to receiving $1 million in federal funds that will be used toward the development of the Bexar County Solar Collection Farm and Distribution Center.

This project involves the installation of a 200-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system at the Bexar County Justice Center. The county wants the solar system at the building to generate 10 percent of its annual electricity usage.

San Antonio is on the short list to become home to a solar manufacturing plant that would be built by a Chinese company, County Judge Nelson Wolff said Friday.

Yingli Green Energy Holding Co., which markets its products under the name Yingli Solar, is the company that is searching for a plant site and has narrowed its choices to five cities, including San Antonio, officials said.

Yingli could invest $20 million in the manufacturing plant, which would bring 315 jobs to the city, a source close to the negotiations said. Officials from the Chinese company have looked at four locations in San Antonio as potential plant sites, including two on the East Side, the source added.
