Are those other "tunnels" in Houston and Dallas actual tunnels, or are they just large underpasses too?

The only real tunnels I've been through is the one near downtown Mobile and one along I-70 in Colorado.

Yeah, I was a little dissapointed when I saw the pic. After going though 395 tunnel under the US Capitol, 12th street or the Hampton Rds Bridge/Tunnels that cross the bay, I was expecting a little more digging to happen. Even K St. by GWU is more of a tunnel.
I was expecting a straight shot from I-10 to Floyd Curl.
By the looks of the pic, it doens't make sense to have 8 lanes when it is 3 lanes around the turn before Fred rd. Are they going to widen it all the way to I-10? At least 5 lanes (two lanes each way and a turning center lane) near Horizon Hill? Are these the same guys who planned Wurzbach Parkway? Think of the Midas and Whataburger.
I think a 1 mile diret tunnel from the I-10/410 interchange to Louis Pasteur is better.

Well, SA does have a big tunnel, you just can't drive in it.
