I agree, I had no idea he went into such detail until recently.

I spotted The Illinois in this illustration of FLW's Broadacre City.
It looks as if someone might have added it later.

To be the proper height, it would have to be way off in the
distant horizon, not a mile or two down the road.

If it were indeed at THAT location, it would extend
way off the top of the page.

I think NDPhilly might have had a couple brews when he wrote that.

There are a couple things I've never heard anyone bring up about this building. I know it's not a real proposal, but if it were truly intended on being built, how deep would a foundation for a structure like that need to be? I would imagine it would need to be dozens of floors deep at least. Also, could the ground it would have been constructed on in Chicago even bear the weight of such as immense structure and/or the depth that it's foundation would require? I know it's all speculation, but I'm interested nonetheless.

The foundation would only need to be ~125' deep since that's where the bedrock here starts. I believe the bedrock is dolomite or something like that. The rock beneath Chicago can supposedly bear ridiculous loads that we haven't even come close to approaching yet. Wright theorized that this building could have been built when he designed it and I believe he took bedrock into account as well.

Thanks for answering. But I wonder if 125' be deep enough to keep a building with that much surface area stable in high winds?

Well its not really the depth that matters, its the mass of the building and how its anchored into the rock. Most wind can be dissipated by a very massive building, but that puts extra weight on the foundations. So it could be done, its just they would have to find the best way to anchor it.

Which is why, I beleive, Wright designed a taproot foundation for the building.

^^^
That's a great question.
I've always heard north of downtown along the lakefront.

But I doubt that FLW had a specific parcel of land.

The closest thing I have is a plan for the ground floor.

The plan includes the surrounding parking stucture and heliports.
Four cascading waterfalls flow at angles from the tower.

Did Wright ever provide an estimate of how big the floor area of this tower would be. I'm curious if it would "have been" over 10 million sq. ft.*

Sears Tower has close to 4.5 millions sq. ft, yet Burj Dubai due to its slender design contains only about 3.5 millions sq. ft. despite its height.

Given that The Illinois looks just as slender as BD I'm curious how much space the tower would have contained.
