Ok guys, this is going to be kinda fun! Will the project end with utility poles like Max & it looks like some others think? Or will the utilities be underground like most of us think?

Time will tell!!!

As I said, lower Broadway is about to begin work on major reconstruction into a complete street. Those lines will be buried.

Regardless of whether or not lines are going to buried, no artist will EVER include power lines in an architectural rendering just to keep it more realistic. A rendering is supposed to show off the building, not its surroundings. Obviously including power lines would be very distracting and ugly. It might make a good case to the city for burying the lines, but as far as presenting the building to a client and to the public, it's ludicrous to include them because they're so damn ugly and everyone knows it.

Don't expect to see power lines and poles disappear anytime soon.

Let me express apologies to Maxus on behalf of this site. There are some on this site that are simply intolerant to any whisper of a critique of anything going on in San Antonio.
I don’t think you need to apologize for anyone on this site. This thread went from great to petty really fast. The post above mine providing facts should have been the only one made. If someone wants to complain about power poles then take it to the off topic thread as they clearly do not pertain to this project.

I respectfully disagree. First and foremost, everyone who uses this forum is a human being. Humans have feelings, and when others verbally assail a forumer just for posting an opinion it has repercussions. It hurts that individual, and it makes the forum an uncomfortable place for everyone. Tempers flare and people get upset. So I think it is absolutely the right thing to apologize on behalf of the forumers who may or may not act responsibly and apologize themselves. It makes the forum a better place for everyone, yourself included.

Let's all have a good day and show respect for each other.

Back to this project: I think the poles are very much on topic. Maxus was showing what this project would look like with them, and it seems there's an actual chance they may stay there. I hope not, but it could happen.

Anyway, I like this project. It's too bad about Still Golden. That place has character inside and out that will be gone forever. But hopefully the street level is nice and hopefully it will have a good pedestrian-friendly vibe to it.

Exactly Rynetwo. Apologize for yourself if you feel the need, but speaking for others is... well, plain weak, & flat out unnecessary, especially if the reason in which it is being done is to grandstand. Which to me at least, is why it has been done in this thread.

Also, I think the off topic thread would be a good place for those who want to discuss utility poles further.

I think if the city of San Antonio has no problem spending $300,000 in taxpayer money to keep a chicken restaurant out of the airport they can do something about the powerlines. Just my two cents.

This is starting to go way off topic into unnecessary realms. But before I ask everyone to get back to topic, I will address this. The city did not spend $300,000 to keep chuck fil a out of the airport. They spent zero dollars to tell a airport concessions vendor they were not allowed to include chick fil a. It was a vote in council. The $300,000 they have spent sense is on legal fees from a lawsuit filed by people who opposed that move.

With that said, please back to topic.

I understand why it's so expensive to bury the power lines. They must have to dig 30 feet deep to get those poles underground.

Ha. That was the best post in all the recent nonsense in this thread.

Funny.

My wife works for CPS Energy in the GIS department, has also worked in mapping and Quality Assurance and Control. Burying lines is expensive, especially retroactively.

She's also been on projects for Downtown electrical, and been in meetings with top CPS officials, who have discussed the expense of burying power lines.

I'm all for underground electrical, and hope we can move in that direction, but it won't be easy, fast, or cheap.

Why are you so trigger happy with deleting posts?

Is the forum running out of bandwidth or something? These threads get people talking. It’s literally the point of having a forum. It’s not like people are posting links to viruses or porn or something. They’re just... expressing opinions.

The posts had NOTHING to do with this building.

If people want to complain about power lines there is a thread titled, "SAN ANTONIO │ City and Metro Off-Topic Thread".

The thing is, this thread, along with most of the other site-specific threads, will have very little to no activity for months as we wait for these projects to progress. Since that's the case, what harm is there to discuss tangentially related topics? Discussions tend to start with thread-specific topics and then veer off as nothing new happens. Switching threads isn't a natural thing to do in this situation. Enforcing strict adherence to the topic seems to discourage participation, which is the ultimate point of online discussion forums.

It all started with maxus showing a rendering of what the building would look like with utility poles, and even showed some examples of new residential buildings in downtown with utility poles left in place after construction. Sirkingwilliam is the one that fired shots with such quotes as "This rendering you mocked up is not only ridiculous but completely nonsensical in every aspect. You understand that is not at all what will happen, right?

It’s so off base, it’s not even funny"

I'm not trying to start anything, and I don't post as much on here, but when I read through these forums, I always feel like sirkingwilliam always comes off as condescending on here. Maybe that's just the job of a moderator, I don't know.

There are alot of posters here that purposely post material that they hope will cause controversy, put people down, put down projects & put down San Antonio. I'm glad they are deleted. I actually would like to see more of those type of posts deleted. & if some of my post are deleted calling those people out, so be it.
