Part of that is by design. With a shrinking population and many largely abandoned neighborhoods (some with just 10% occupancy), the city did things like cut electrical power/streetlights and services to areas to 'encourage' the remaining residents to relocate. And then demoed all the structures/razed whole neighborhoods.

The funny part is, that image is (or is well on its way to being) out of date.

There's an arena currently being built in part of it and a large residential proposal occupying another block of vacant land in it, for example.

I know we're getting off topic, but that's so weird to see America in the foreground, Canada in the background, and possibly Cleveland's skyline in the tiny top left corner.

For all of its problems, what's the likelihood of seeing any redesign of 2400 Market? Any at all?

There are things that PMC can do to make it less of a wall. A few pages ago, I suggested a "Dockside" step-like design in which the Chestnut Street side may be 4-5 floors and then gradually rise to 25-30 floors on the Market Street side.

That's just one idea. There are ways to design the building that allows it to be taller but less bulkier. I think the city can ask.

If the NIMBYs can get together and create arbitrary problems with good projects, they should certainly be able to demand a redesign where one is desperately needed.

For those unaware, it's 91 miles. The height of Key Tower in Cleveland is 888', so if this image was taken from 4,098 feet up (it's not), and the resolution was high enough you would be looking at Cleveland, Ohio with Canada in between:

Interesting observation. I had no idea Cleveland and Detroit were so close.

on clear evening flights I have seen Detroit then Cleveland then even Toronto in the distance from Ohare to PHL

I believe there is point where Toronto and Cleveland can be located at the same time Detroit and Cleveland usually wont as the angle is never right but Cleveland and Detroit are about the same distance as Manhattan and CC I believe

Except unlike between us and New York, more than half of it is a sea of fresh water with a spooky name.

Random observation: If you map out the old New York Central routes from Cleveland to Toledo, Erie, and Columbus, it turns out they're at least as well-engineered from a pure geometry and curvature standpoint as the Northeast Corridor is between here and New York.

I hope the CCRA gets its claws into this project and forces the developers to redo the massing of the tower portion.

Yes, but who are the neighbors in this area? PMC seems to have an unusual ability to get bad projects through and focuses in locations without a solid bloc of residents. Let's be the honorary NIMBYs on this.

I think Fitler Square technically (and practically) ends more like Locust or Panama. But maybe in spirit! Not sure what area 24th and Market is. It might actually still fall in Logan Square, but it's really almost nothing.

Good idea. Under Robert's Rules of Order, I declare us all board members for life. Now, who called this meeting? And are we ever going to get the big table in here or do I have to go out and cut down that tree myself?
