On a serious note, folks like balconies. I mean if one is paying $600k+ CAD for a shoe box sized condo with a view, a balcony is a huge plus. Put a nice chair out there, light a cigar, and watch the cranes in the distance.
Plus you can have some potted plants out there and watch the sunset from your comfortable chair. Nice place to have lunch or dinner, or just a beer or cocktail and take in the view. Makes a small apartment or condo better.

Also great for tossing chairs onto expressways. Meet Toronto's infamous 'Chair Girl'.

^ WTF?

she's probably too stupid to realize how potentially fatal that was.

I hope she was prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Shit that wantonly wreckless deserves jail time to send a message.

She got off very easy, and got a huge amount of exposure out of the very dangerous stunt.

Last time I heard, she was working as an escort or shilling amateur porn

She got a sentence fitting that she didn't injure or kill anyone. These towers have a ton of shit going on inside of them including more shit being thrown off of balconies since this was recorded.

Given her galling insouciance and clueless lack of remorse, I do think she should have been given a short jail sentence, just to send a message. However, community service is also a fitting sentence for a narcissist who has in all likelihood never done anything for anyone else.

The fact no one happened to get injured is almost unconditional to the crime. Like shooting a bullet into a crowd for fame -oh that's okay, we'll make you do community service for that, and don't do it again.

Exactly. The outcome, when it’s random, should have zero bearing on the sentencing.

If my crime is “I abducted you with the intent of performing Russian Roulette on you three times in a row then flee the scene never to return”, and did exactly that, I’m a very sick evil bastard who should receive a sentence that matches what I did.

Thinking about it, our justice systems don’t work like that — when a victim is hospitalized between life and death, the perpetrator’s legal fate is up in the air, when it (IMO) should not be, the crime being the same (“a potentially lethal attack”).

I agree. A lot of folks knock on balconies but as a buyer, would definitely want one, at least in a big city. Its an asset. Like you said, the views, maybe light up a fat one with some music and enjoy the sunset... and the traffic in the distance.

I would definitely get a telescope and place it on the balcony. Might as well do some sightseeing as well.

Considering the absurd price of Toronto condos, its a must have.

I would guess the condo/strata rules wouldn't allow one to light up a fat one on a balcony. Doesn't mean you couldn't. Afterall, things get thrown off the balconies.

I don't smoke (well not anymore, since getting married), but if I did, I'd be really pissed off if some condo rule prohibited me from lighting up on my own balcony.

Steveve’s latest downtown Toronto Future Model looking north-west at the downtown core from the lake to Bloor/Yorkville.

Grey is Built, blue is Under Construction and pink is Approved and Proposed (but not started).

Includes 2 supertalls under construction (SkyTower and The One), a 3rd that is listed @ 299m but has one elevation @300m+ (Concord Sky) and a 4th that may start sooner than expected (early 2024?) after its shorter Phase 1 @ 263m sold-out
very quickly and began site demolition (Frank Gehry's FORMA - Phase 2 @ 308m).

Lots of 200 metre+ under construction and approved/proposed in there as well. Scroll a bit>>>

Smoking within 10' of someone's window? Who'd put up with that?

Condos have rules for a reason.

The rules can be a bit odd in this case. Technically they can prohibit you from smoking on your balcony, but they must also give 24 hours notice of entry to inspect the balcony for evidence of smoking. Enforcement is impossible.

Also, they cannot restrict smoking within the unit since that's not condo corporation asset (balconies are exclusive use but owned by the condo corporation).

My building attempted prohibiting smoking on balconies after the most recent fire from a thrown cigarette; the wind blows them onto a lower balcony.

Enforcement is impossible? You can see people when they're on their balcony. If a neighbour wanted to complain they'd just need to snap a quick photo or video of the person doing it.

If you’re a suspected gun owner and known for bad temper maybe a GTA condo board will let you smoke with impunity …

Yeah, I get (And perhaps support) these reasons. I am just thinking of my former self, apartment dwelling in inner city Montreal and Vancouver, with a rather nasty smoking habit (thankfully conquered since marriage nearly 18 years ago)

Smokers of 18 years ago would have to grow up fast in today's environment.
