Here's a quick and dirty snap of the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre. Sorry about the quality and angle of the pic - it was taken on my phone while stopped at a red light.

Awesome, thank you for sharing! It looks good for what it is. I'm glad it will have some glass.

oh wow! that's really popped up!!

that will be a nice start to density in mount pearl!

is only one of them this much done? (are they doing one at a time?)

edit: I can see the first picture doesnt have a roof whereas the secont does, so they are making good progress! there will be 4 so this will start to look pretty cool!

I'm SO happy to see some new density! even if it's not highrises yet! at least it raises the ceiling of the area a bit

I can't say I like the cladding on the new hotel on Kenmount road. It looks very.. cheap country lodge, I don't know

It's not bad, I just think it looks weird and unfitting. Some probably like it though, so it's all good! At least it's unique

I don't mind it. Similar to the proposed Hilton but, since it's out in the suburbs and not a monstrosity, I don't mind.

Mt. Pearl's Automated Garbage Collection Successful

Quote:
The mayor of Mount Pearl says he gives the new automated garbage collection system a high passing grade. The new system came out of the city's municipal plan, and was met with mixed opinions when they started the program a few months ago. Residents had concerns about the weight and mobility of the specialized garbage containers which were provided by the city. But Simms says the winter season will be the true test of whether or not automated garbage collection can work or not. Simms says it's not a new system. He says they did a fair amount of study around the project to see if it would work with our weather. There are some kinks to work now, but overall the council is pleased with the system. Simms says they have challenges with seniors and hilly terrain, but overall, he would rate it over ninety percent.

Onwards and Upwards for Mount Pearl

Quote:
The mayor of Mount Pearl says the city does not see its future as a place full of high rises. However, Mount Pearl is growing in leaps and bounds in regards to residential and business areas. Randy Simms says the city is already home to the largest business park in the province and they are currently developing their third business area. Simms says Mount Pearl neighbourhoods are booming as well.

Simms says over 300 condo units will be built in 2013 in the city. He says the majority are built for seniors who want a lifestyle without snow clearing, gardening, etc. Simms says the market is demanding and Mount Pearl is responding.

Simms says the city continues to grow at a steady pace and that 85 new small businesses opened in Mount Pearl recently, which created approximately 400 jobs.

We can't have Mount Pearl being anything other than stereotypical suburban sprawl.

I would like to know "why not mr. mayor?" as well! Mount Pearl might be able to grow this year, but do they not realize that once they've filled in what land they have left there is no growing? They are boxed in on all sides and have nowhere to go but up. It doesn't make sense to me for the mayor to say he doesn't want to see his city grow.. Oh well, more population growth for St. John's. The quaint suburban neighborhood of Mount Pearl can stay where they are forever as long as I am concerned. Leave the highrises to the big boys.. or, join us and come along for the ride

I think he actually ment it in the sense "We might not be filling up with highrises lol but we are growing a lot"

Heard yesterday that I.J. Sampson school is slated for demolition. I wish I knew more, but that is all for now. Perhaps the province will sell the property for private development??

Or maybe a site for the courthouse if it doesn't go on the grace site?

hmmm, maybe. Would seem strange to me since it is nestled in a small residential area. I would like to see the grace site turned into either all residential by extending Bradbury Place. Or, as I posted in the concept thread a few weeks back, turned into a Churchill Square type development. Too bad I don't have a lot of money and power to make either happen

P.S. I live right in this area, so I am very interested to see what happens with both sites. I think the courthouse should stay downtown somewhere.

Edit: Given the financial crunch that will be coming in the next couple of years, I think it is unlikely the provincial government is going to do much with these sites anytime soon. Perhaps they should sell one or both of them.

Haven't you figured it out yet? We all live in the same basement.

Oh... that was deep.
