7 mega panoramics of São Paulo (NOT for 56kbps!)

photos from Gutooo (Carlos Augusto Magalhães), with exception of pic number 6, that somebody found and posted like 3-4 years ago, and nobody knows who shot it anymore.

1 - from Paulista Av towards Berrini

2 - from Berrini towards Paulista Av.

3-

4 - from Mirante do Vale tower, at Old Downtown/Anhangabaú towards Paulista

5- from Mirante do Vale towards Banespa

6 - from Serra da Cantareira, at the north of the city, towards the whole city

7 - from Banespa, at old downtown, 360 degrees

Sao Paulo always blows me away with its giganticism, but the city really needs a cluster of supertalls/signature buildings to give it some perspective.

I dont think thats ever gonna happen. Brazilian authorities in ALL cities work towards limiting the height of buildings. And brazilian urbanists and many architects are also against skyscrapers...

What exactly is the point of Brazilian Cities being so anti skyscraper in all districts of all cities. I simply do not understand. What is wrong with some 800 to 900 foot towers in certain sections of brazilian cities. I can see the government being against 1200 foot and higher towers but not buildings in the height range I mentioned earlier.

Frankly I think it is time for Brazil to step into the new millenium, when San Francisco is looking at building several towers over 800 feet and one that may be 1200 it makes Brazils thinking look even more rediculous.

Ive seen those photos before, and Im still like, holy crap is that for real? I would get so lost in there. How does Sao Paulo rank density-wise? It has to be up there. And population-wise, is only Tokyo ahead of it?

Well maybe because the money could be spent wiser on , for example, refitting blocks in bad shape instead of running after one's pride. Building skyscrapers is awesome but not always so useful right ? Maybe brazilian cities aren't like Hong-Kong...

quite the contrary. You will hardly see refiting of old buildings or even demolitons in Brasil. There are plenty of new modern towers being build, but you will never see the skyscrapers not because brazilian construction companies dont like them, but because of city´s governments and brazilian urbanists and architects.

why do they hate skyscrapers?

Sao Paulo has a massive amount of buildings. It's unbelievable.

They think skyscrapers are not necessary, make the transit a mess, require too much infrastructure work, etc, etc.

I say with all confidence that São Paulo has the densest skyline in the world. It looks like a multicolored wall from a distance, with only tiny breaks here and there.

São Paulo's population is around 18 million in the metro area (source: World Almanac). It also has some severe pollution problems, and some of those photos look smoggy.

On some other thread, there was an argument over the skyscraper "population" of São Paulo, and a few posters mentioned friends or relatives that had obtained lists from the city planning department listing over 40,000 buildings over 12 stories.

And not a single one over 600 feet

its not as bad as it could be, because many cars run on ethanol and ALL cars run on gasoline mixed with 20% of ethanol since the 80s.

but there are many BUSES and trucks in Brasil, and many trucks are in deplorable state, or are old, and they do emmit lots of smoke.

I was the one who gave that number. The number comes from Cello1974, a german forumer in SSC who lived in São Paulo and got the numbers from a friend who worked at the city hall.

I flew into Sao Paulo last year on my way to Rio (a truly amazing city) and was blown away by the size of the city, the largest city in the Southern hemisphere.

I will never forget flying over the city and seeing nothing but highrises from one end of the horizon to the other, it just seemed to go on forever.
