Manila - 41,515 People/Sq Km. Manila is the earth's most densely populated city.

conversely, I wonder if Juneau is the world's least dense city, at 4.7 people/sq. km.?

Technically correct, though the City of Manila is only 42 sqkm in area - making it the world's most densely populated municipality. But with 22,710,000 people in 1,475 sqkm (15,397/sqkm), its urban area is still very dense as well.

Yep, some of my favourite places in China are the old neighbourhoods, particularly Shanghai's shikumen and Beijing's hutongs. A lot of them have sadly been lost, but there are efforts to preserve what is left, which is good.
