As expected, there are some problematic cases, specially on City Population. Demographia seems more worried to provide more precise numbers and coherent definitions.

Looks like City Population uses Greater Toronto - Hamilton while Demographia uses Greater Toronto.

Demographia is urban area based. In their link they have a large explanation on definitions, and talk specifically about Canada right in the beginning.

For Toronto, it's a combined urban area, the ones of Oshawa, Toronto and Hamilton. Similar cases are New York and Bridgeport, Los Angeles and San Bernardino, San Francisco and San Jose, Chicago and Kenosha, Boston and Providence (this one for the first time), etc.

Bridgeport should not be part of the New York urban area. Neither should Stamford really.

Besides contiguousness, there needs to be an urban area definition that separates cities that are historically their own centers

Eg hamilton, on
Providence
Stamford, ct
Baltimore

Etc

I disagree. If we follow this strictly, even small towns couldn't be encompassed by large metropolitan areas or Jersey City or Brooklyn should be brought separated.

Virtually 90% of Fairfield County is simply result from New York's urban expansion. Cities grow and things change.

Here in this link of City Population, we can see all the urban areas and clusters of the US: http://citypopulation.de/php/usa-ua.php. And on page 10 of Demographia's report (12 on the PDF), they specify the urban areas they combined: http://www.demographia.com/db-worldua.pdf

Then, I have some criticisms. They were very generous to Boston, Salt Lake City, Seattle, but not to Detroit, where Ann Arbor or at least South Lyon-Howell should be combined, adding over 400k people. Ditto for Cleveland and Lorain (more 200k), which are been contiguous for several decades.

Given they've combined Boston and Providence, Washington and Baltimore should be too.

Thanks although Demographia definitely isn't including Hamilton as part of Toronto's urban area.

They are. Go to page 10 (or 12) of their report. Toronto is formed by Toronto, Hamilton and Oshawa urban areas.

According to the Wikipedia, numbers match: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...tres_in_Canada

That's absurd. Stamford is the leading business center in suburban NY, and has the highest commuter rail ridership into Manhattan of any suburban station.

It goes without saying that the entire corridor from Stamford into Manhattan has been urbanized for 100 years. It's more linked to Manhattan than even some fringe parts of NYC proper.

My brother lives in the South Lyon area, and that's definitely Detroit. It's just newer suburban sprawl, but everyone considers themselves Detroiters and works in Metro Detroit jobs. Everyone works in the auto industry.

This is very true.

While the Census may be a bit too generous in what it considers urban, there is really no doubt that the Ann Arbor UA and the South Lyon-Howell-Brighton UA have grown together. In fact, the Port Huron UA is now connected with a tendril along the St. Clair River with the Detroit UA.

I wonder if your sources use American definitions for some of the American cities? I said it in another thread, but while the Census may take in more land than most countries would who measure these statistics, combining UAs and UCs here is nearly impossible. The only way to adjacent UAs/UCs are combined is if one is in danger of losing its status as a UA/UC due to population loss, which is just a weird rule.

BTW, I think some are confusing urban area and metropolitan area, again. Transit connections have nothing to do with whether something is an urban area or not, at least not directly. Urban agglomerations are a spartial measurement, not a commuter measurement. That two cores might have a commuter rail connection is not a factor in a spatial measurement.

Yes it is, it's combining the Statcan "population centre" (used to be called urban area) data for Toronto, Hamilton and Oshawa.

The other site is just combining the full CMA populations of Toronto, Hamilton and Oshawa.

I have friends who commute from Fairfield and Stamford into Midtown every workday on MetroNorth. If it's connected by commuter rail, it's sure as hell part of the urban area.

Just quote his post, like if your going to reply, and you can see the format used. Quick way to utilize it. Use the "----" or "...." to keep it aligned.

I'm surprised that there's a 665,000 difference between urban area and CMA. There are a lot more people in those 'empty' bits than I thought. Would either of you know what the area of this is?

I'm not sure that having commuter rail is enough. Toronto has commuter rail to Peterborough, Barrie, Guelph, KW, Milton, and Niagara Falls. None of those places are part of the Toronto urban area.

South Bend has commuter rail to Chicago. Trenton has commuter rail to both Philly and NYC.
