Very interesting, since we rarely see high quality street level pics from African cities. I have the feeling that the differences between Cape Town and Johannesburg are the same as between Rio and Sao Paulo.

meh, Joburg is pretty darn segregated (at least that was my opinion from when I visited).

looks surprisingly American. I see the Latin American influence, but also New Orleans and Socal. great pics!

cool stuff, most of my extended family lives in or around joburg, i remember visiting in the 70's and 80's as a kid, obviously it was quite different back then, last time i went was 2002, didn't really get into see a lot of areas as it was probably worse in a lot of areas, we drove around a lot of places though. we visited some family friends in rosettenville and had to park in their garage as every visitor who parked on the street had their car broken into.

Oh it's definitely very segregated by North American standards - the townships are virtually 99.9% black. In the wealthier areas this is seemingly starting to change a bit though. And Maboneng did legitimately have a diverse mix of people.

Yeah, even in Parkhurst we were warned not to park cars on the street overnight. And in general don't leave anything valuable in plain site if it's during the day. From what I heard in general the city has improved greatly since 2002, although unfortunately there are some areas have gotten worse as well. The older parts of Rosettenville would likely fit into that category, although possibly not the more suburban sections.

Great thread........loved all the commentary. As native from Louisiana can definitely see the NOLA correlation is some of the pics. Spent a week in Joburg back in 2005.....such a
paradoxal city.

Fascinating and informative thread. The city isn't exactly pretty, but it appears to have a lot of interesting neighborhoods - and cool pubs.

Here's hoping you give us a thread on your Cape Town visit.

Also this is kind of a dick comment. Yeah it's segregated and that's a shit thing. But you're dismissal of the entire city isn't cool. ugh.

Jozi has so much going on right now it's amazing.

EDIT: The middle and upper class neighbourhoods are pretty integrated these days, although still majority white. The poor working class area west of the CBD is actually very mixed with a pretty much equal percentage of black, white, coloured and asian people living in the kind of shitty townhouse complexes. Pretoria is another story of course, and is known as SA's whitest city.

I think if you could use the nice word of brother sometimes - but not all the time, only occasionally, when it's really relevant - lots of people including myself would feel better.

Anyway, mate is usually the proper term in the world, sadly... Only so far, tho.

Yeah it's very interesting how SA is more similar to North America than it may be to the rest of Africa. The cities feature all the same things and the sprawl is very similar. Goes along with how black South African's often refer to other countries as "Africa". They are South Africa, up there is Africa.

Incredible thread, this brings back a lot of memories from SA when I was there two years ago. I recognized a lot of the places you went in Soweto, Sandton and the Johannesburg CBD. I made a thread on Cape Town back then, I didn't take enough photos of Johannesburg for it to be worth posting a thread though. This more than does Johannesburg justice, great work all the way around!
