Fun fact: did you know that Philly is one of only three* US cities to have at least four skyscrapers over 800' tall?

(*) SF will join that elite club when the 910' tall U/C oceanwide center is completed.

I agree with Steely Dan about Philly’s skyline. It’s looks like the future is already there.

LA will follow next probably.
And I only see Philly with 3 over 800

I like the first Comcast tower. Meh on the second one. It's just a big building with a flag pole on it getting in those extra feet on a technicality. Like the Wilshire Grand Center in LA.

Oh yeah, Houston has a lot more buildings in the 700 - 800 foot range than Philly, but I still think it's interesting that Philly is the only US city outside of NYC and Chicago with four buildings over 800'.

Considering that LA, Houston, and Atlanta are the only other US cities with three 800+ footers, yeah, the next city to get to four (after SF) will most likely be one of them, and LA is in the best position with it's current proposals.

1. Comcast tech center - 1,112'
2. Comcast center - 974'
3. One liberty plaza - 945'
4. Two liberty plaza - 848'

5. Mellon bank center - 792' (only 8' shy of the 800' threshold)

Yeah, both are kinda "height cheaty", but the visual heft of Comcast Tech Center's mast (vs. the wispy little spire of Wilshire Grand) makes its height seem at least a little more legitimate in my eyes.

That said, if you were gonna ask me which US tower really deserves the "tallest outside of NYC and Chicago crown", I'd have to give it to SF's Salesforce Tower.

Crazy to think that SF will go from 1 800-footer to 4 in just a few short years.

It was considered an underwhelming skyline when I was growing up there.

Based on land values alone, you'd think that SF would at least have a Chicago-sized skyline.

But yeah, it was really slow to grow tall. Until now, that is.

It's been fun to see the SF skyline really grow to a height much more in line with the city's stature.

Good call on Salesforce. I agree. It actually lives up to its height. I was there in March and it's striking in person. They even have a gondola from plaza to some transit center/ park thing. Very cool.

Even though Trump Chicago also cheats with the spire, it's a damn beautiful building.

As for One/Two Liberty Plazas. You guys are welcome from Houston. It was supposed to be 1400' Bank of Southwest killed dead by oil prices. Helmut Jahn recycled the design for those towers.

We're still a wee bit sore here in Chicago that Helmut gave his absolute best skyscraper design work to Philly instead of saving it for his hometown skyline, but those two towers really do look great in Philly, so it's all good.....

In Austin, we have 6 X Guadalupe under construction now. It's 848 feet with 65 floors. It's office and condos. This will be the 6th tallest building in Texas and the 5th highest roof. It will also be the highest residential in the country outside of New York, Chicago, Miami and San Francisco, and will have the highest pool in Texas. It will actually have 3 pools and over 45,000 square feet of outdoor space. Over an acre of outdoor space on multiple setbacks.

It won't be lonely either. This will likely be our tallest for a while unless the ATX/Railyard Towers project proves to be taller - which it might. That one looks to be around 950 feet. There is also the 823 foot 4th & Brazos Tower being planned for the other side of downtown. There are also three 700+ foot towers planned. Based on what's planned with filings through the city, we could end up with one 900 footer, two 800 footers, three or four 700 footers, and at least eight 600 footers for a total of 13 or 14 buildings over 600 feet. For comparison sake, Houston has 19 over 600 feet with another 600 footer under construction, and Dallas has 11 buildings over 600 feet.

6 X Guadalupe will be the 4th new tallest building Austin has seen since the Frost Bank Tower became the first 500 footer here in 2004. Before that, the One American Center had been our tallest at 401 feet from 1984 to 2004.

Comcast Center ranks third, followed by Three Logan Square and BNY Mellon Center.
Have always really loved Mellon Bank.. actually wish it was the pinnacle of Philly's cluster @ 1400 feet or so. Comcast Tech deserves early retirement.

As twins go, 1 Liberty is one of the best modern takes on classic NYC skyscrapers but 2 Liberty looks like a circumcision gone terribly wrong (or still waiting for construction completion).

Austin is on a tear with all of their new buildings.

Yep, as I mentioned earlier, Atlanta, along with Houston and LA, is one of the other US cities with 3 towers over 800'.

Here's the full list of US cities with 800+ footers (including U/C):

NYC: 32 + 13 U/C = 44*
Chicago: 15 + 5 U/C = 20
Philly: 4
SF: 3 + 1 U/C = 4
LA: 3
Atlanta: 3
Houston: 3
Dallas: 2
Seattle: 1 + 1 U/C = 2
Miami: 1 + 1 U/C = 2
Cleveland: 1
Charlotte: 1
Oklahoma City: 1
Pittsburgh: 1
Austin: 0 + 1 U/C = 1

Source: CTBUH

(*) Includes 1 U/C 800+ footer in Jersey City

Seattle has a residential/office tower nearing completion a hair taller than that.

^ and the 910' tall Oceanwide Center U/C in SF also is a mixed-use office/residential tower, which would make it the tallest such tower in the US outside of NYC/Chicago.
