Our two tallest have the dopiest crowns. They'll have to answer to the Architect Gods someday. In the meantime, I can think of 4 new towers, plus the Frost that will help keep Austin's skyline...not weird.

This Flickr page has some photos of the main roof taken from inside the crown.

Images from that flickr link.

It looks a LOT smaller from the ground.

Views from the (technically) highest floor:

This one is really cool - a close-up of the material used for the crown.

I don't really see anything mechanical up there that requires ventilation, so there's really no point to have it screened instead of a proper crown of (any!) some kind.

What a complete architectural middle finger to everyone and the rest of the skyline.

They could at least string a bunch of those Christmas red chilies lights between the tops of the fence posts.

I asked them on Facebook again a few weeks ago if they were still planning to light the crown, and they said they still plan to.

I like the crown as is. It's different from all angles and changes at all times of day. And the random vitriol and shade thrown its way only strengthens my opinion. With that said, I am excited to see the lighting. Austin's skyline in the late 90's, while smaller, was so colorful and fun. Really hope to get that going again.

The crown would honestly be fine if that chain metal stuff went all the way to the top. Not good, but fine.

Yeah I honestly think that the hatred is more of a meme than anything at this point.

This is exactly my problem with it. Either finish the screen all the way to the top, or if they're going for a spiky / comb look, they should have emphasized that more. Right now it just looks like they're missing the last little panels.

So you're one of those people who needs to have a contrarian opinion. Noted. There's nothing random about it when a wide majority disapprove of it.

Popular opinion does not automatically make something a meme. "Are they going to finish the top?" is something that nearly everyone has asked me when they come to Austin to visit.
But I guess that's just random and anecdotal.

I mean, duh. But I 100% believe that the level of vitriol and hatred is the result of the internet echo chamber. "An architectural middle finger" is pretty silly hyperbole to me. People need to calm down.

There's nothing quite like a new building to bring out the critics. The criticisms can be fairly similar too. For ex see quotes below...guess which building are they describing?? Answer below.

"Everything seemed fine, until that mess on top appeared. It seems proportionately too small for the rest of the building...

I had hope when it was a skeleton, but then the material that fills in the frame appeared. It just looks dirty on sunny days, disappears on cloudy days, and somehow, manages to dwarf the whole structure. This building looks more than unfinished. It looks ill-conceived."

"I keep hoping the owners will see the proverbial light and add some color to the top.

So which building is it?? Drumroll....! Answer and source.

To be fair, having a multi-colored light on the top of that crown would be pretty sweet too. Once of the best views of downtown is the 5 minutes when the lights are warming up, and the crown is green.
