LOL nice mansplaining!!!!

Dubas totally caved in every negotiation he's had his hands on and completely broke the RFA market in the process.

Good Luck winning with half the cap tied up in 4 forwards.

Shanaplan indeed.

Mansplaining? I don't think that word means what you think it does.

The fact is the market experienced a sharp reversal circa 2016-2017 after several years of severe RFA discounts. Gaudreau, Mackinnon, Pastrnak all clearly lost out on their negotiations. We are now in a league where offensive production peaks much earlier than it ever has, and so players and agents are asking why they shouldn't be paid for their most productive years. Draisatl was actually the first real large RFA contract to be paid for future performance. See also Rantanen, Point, and Laine for how this is not just a Dubas/Toronto issue. No doubt Dubas still fucked up the Marner negotiation (Matthews is murkier). Marner should have been sub $9.5 or walk away from the table. At the same time, he would've been equally crucified if the Leafs weren't able to perform with their 90 point winger playing in Switzerland.

I'm willing to bet within the next 5 years there will be shift to teams willing to spend more money to keep RFAs, and less willing to keep paying UFAs with 1-3 productive years left ridiculous contracts. I would rather have any of this years big RFAs locked up than Panarin, Duchene, or Pavelski.

Canucks and Flames split the split squad games.
Both away teams won
Canuck's best players did not play

Is Myers injury prone? He's only missed 2 games in the last 2 seasons.

Point is we are a lot better equipped to handle injuries with Myers and strong Calder candidate Hughes added to the blue line. These 2 guys are also going to vastly improve our PP. Hughes on 1st unit and Myers on second unit. The second unit will be the most improved.

Overall Canucks should score a lot more goals this year. I think we'll be in the running for 1st in the Pacific, at least for a little while.

Vancouver beats the Oilers but the Canucks had some big names on the ice.

The sky is falling in Winnipeg!

Quote:
According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, Winnipeg Jets defenceman is believed to be pondering his NHL future as he takes a leave of absence from the club.

McKenzie notes Byfuglien is weighing his options at the moment and remains without a timetable for a decision. Neither the Jets defenceman or his agent, Ben Hankinson, responded to a request for comment from McKenzie.

From what I gather the players won the right to play at the Olympics in exchange for also playing at a World Cup of Hockey (which the owners like better than the Olympics - $$$ for them).

Yay, more pre-season hockey! Boeser making his first appearance. It looks like Ferland is going to be on the top line with Pettersson and Boeser.

Paruzing you-tube videos and came across this Yakupov goal and celebration, which was later mocked by Tom Sestito. Funny as hell...

Partial credit goes to the Toronto media for not shutting up about contracts for 2 years and inflating player values. Still, to not win on a single negotiation when Boston manages to sign someone like McAvoy to an actually reasonable bridge deal is not a good look.

If Marner has a slow start to the season I fear for his well-being.
Some of it was bad timing, but also looking back I wish he hadn't have sat on the Nylander negotiation so long, only to give what Nylander was asking for. If he had have waited it out maybe Nylander signs for less, and it makes a difference in Marner's negotiations. I dunno.

Nine more sleeps.

While the offseason has been pretty dull there are lots of interesting stories to follow this year.

Now that TB has signed Point to a very reasonable contract ($6.75M x 3), there is no reason for the rest of the RFAs not to be signing something similar.

That's a good number to get Point at. He had better numbers than Auston Matthews last year who gets almost twice as much as Point. I guess cuz he plays on a stacked team? Overall though, bridge deals work better for both parties involved imo.

I mean, I know the Sens have basically zero chance to win the Stanley Cup, but ouch. That's a 12000 difference (whatever those numbers are supposed to mean) between the last and second to last team.

^I'd rank Ottawa ahead of a couple simply because they have a scoring defenseman that other teams don't have.

How could the Oilers possibly have better odds than the Canucks? They have no depth whatsoever. Their goaltending looks atrocious. Meanwhile the Canucks added key pieces on forward and d, and they also finished ahead of the Oilers last year. The Oilers peaked when they made the play-offs in 2017. I would be comfortable betting a fortune that the Canucks finish ahead of the Oilers.

Even if I wasn't a Canucks fan, I would still be picking them as the darkhouse surprise team of the year.

McDavid. That is all. I'd rate Vancouver even to slightly better in my preseason poll, but both are very much longshots. Even making the playoffs might be a stretch for both. And yes the goaltending in Edmonton is still a dumpster fire, but then so is the defense so it doesn't really matter who you put in net at this point.

If smith can play well, having a puck moving goaltender like him is massive. Even on the Flames just watching those games he can make the entire team back off. So him outletting to Mcdavid could make for some surprises all year
