Great discussion everyone - as per the people inquiring about the Arts Building at the U of S, I have heard the same rumour from multiple people (including some staff of the university) that the plan is to at least, at a minimum, "square off" the building's two floors where the lecture theatre area (Arts 241) and the Arts Cafe (Booster Juice) are. Essentially creating more space, a bigger lobby (who knows, maybe some more food options). Would be nice to see that come to fruition as anyone who as a walked in the Arts Building during class change time knows how awful that ramp area is on the main floor. I guess we'll see.

Also, an interesting article was posted on The StarPhoenix today regarding the South Downtown Development (River Landing). It's a hefty read, but an interesting one nonetheless.

Four decades later, Saskatoon's south downtown rises

Redevelopment of stretch has long been a goal of the city, but journey has been marked by many dreams and delays.

I'm a little surprised by the amount of 3 bedroom units in this tower. Would have been nicer to see some more 2 and 1 bedroom units facing the river at the higher floors. My guess is that they are looking aiming for those who are downsizing but still want a decent amount of space within a condo unit.
The 3 bedrooms were definitely the most demanded in No 1 RL

There's a lot of detailed information on all 3 projects included in the attachments that I hadn't seen before.
So I looked through the documents for the plaza and the tower.

The plaza looks good, I am happy with the design myself. Lots of greenery, a huge water feature is a little redundant when you are the 3 closest buildings to the river. So I like that they scaled it back and made it smaller than originally planned.

On a sadder note looks like a Saskatoon skyline wont be breaking the 90m mark with the new Nutrien Tower. The MVA documents show it will top out about 87.5m. Will still look good though, and still the tallest by about 8 meters. C'est la vie.

That’s truely sad - especially with the profits Nutrien is shifting from SK to AB and this being the last opportunity in probably 30 yrs to get above 90M. Like what other company in SK would get us another commercial tower? Fingers crossed Nexgen builds a uranium mine here and wants a big office downtown! Their current core sampling up north is showing a lot more profitable mine than any of Cameco’s current mines.

Nonetheless I’m excited to change Regina’s skyscraper Wikipedia page that says they have the tallest skyscraper in between Winnipeg and Calgary heeehee.

Its really unfortunate that the Nutrien tower will not be 95m. At that height it would have been substantially taller than the condo. Of course its still taller but I think it won't look dramatically taller. Also these office towers have pretty big floorplates. Nutrien tower is going to look just a little more stubby at 87m than 95m.

Some other progress around town:

^^^ Fence up at Escala site. Not much visible progress but I could hear demo going on inside when I went past. We need an Escala thread.

^^^ The house next to the church is also being demolished. All the trees and shrubs on the lot have been cut.

^^^ View from alley.

^^^ Excavation at Queen & 8th for new office building. The pit looks pretty big in person.

I agree that this was an excellent shot at reaching over 90m; however, I'd say we could very possibly get a mixed-use building that could top the 90m mark. Say, for example, a combination of retail, commercial, and residential. I could see something like that happening on the parcels of land near the farmers market.

On another note, would love if someone could post a progress picture for River Quarry!

Focus on downtown Saskatoon arena first, panel hears
Planning experts weigh in on how to build a vibrant core

PHIL TANK, SASKATOON STARPHOENIX
March 13, 2019

The next steps on the path to a more vibrant downtown in Saskatoon should start with a new arena, planning experts said Tuesday night.

A packed theatre at the Remai Modern art gallery heard from several experts in Saskatoon for three days of discussions on downtown development and ways the city can convince people to live downtown.

“I actually love the idea of hitting the arena first and getting it out of the way,” said Cathy Grant, a Vancouver-based urban development leader and real estate sales specialist.

Being a couple inches taller isn't really worth bragging about?

Discussion has gone a little limp around here...

The renovation to Midtown on the Sears end of the mall looks to be going strong from what I've noticed on the outside. The South entrance has a new steel girder structure erected that sticks out more from the main edge of the building which will be interesting to see what they do with that (it also seems taller than the building). The upper Southwest corner (above where MEC is going?) has glass in already that's looking great as well.

In other mall reno news, Centre looks to have started their renos and have torn out the ceilings throughout the hallways.

Since the weather is better outside, could someone/a few people go around and take photos of what is happening around town? I live out of town and the discussions are great, but its even better with photo updates. Thanks in advance!

MEC is going into the current food court space I believe. The 2nd floor in the Southwest corner is where the food court is moving into. Need to get it done so they can start work on MEC.

I'll be in town this weekend and post some shots of midtown construction and River Quarry. The construction that's happening at Midtown sure doesn't reflect the photos or the price tag they were saying in articles.. They are definitely getting pressure from MEC to get the food court moved though which is good since Midtown's simple reno's they just "finished" took like 3 years to complete...

Oh right, I thought MEC was more in that corner--the what-looks-to-be Crate and Barrel may be there though.

Looking back at this article (https://thestarphoenix.com/news/loca...court-location) the food court is supposed to be moved by the end of July and we'll have to wait another year and a bit for MEC to open in the current food court spot.
