1990 - photo from an issue of National Geographic magazine from June 1990. I'll have to remember this one for the photo.

Let me know if everyone can see this next one. This photo was taken from the roof of the Hyatt. The construction visible there is of 816 Congress. Note that the One American Center is missing. I'm guessing it would have been just coming out of the ground then since both buildings were supposed to be completed in 1984. The cranes north of the Capitol were working on the William B. Travis State Office Building. Also under construction during that time was the Hilton Garden Inn and the Sabine Apartments that were built at the same time, and the Hobby Building.

First photo, 1981. Note the crane working on the Hyatt.

This one is probably from late 1984 since the One American Center is there. Also, the Hilton Garden Inn and Sabine were both under construction. The crane in the foreground is working on one of those big loveable state parking garages in the Capitol complex.

Great pictures, great find, Kevin. That is the most photos of the old American Bank (Chase Bank) gold tower I've seen in one place.

You can see the Hilton way in the background. It had just opened in 2004.

These show the Austin I remember when I was a kid (1978) and my college days (1990). Looking at the 1990 photo makes me feel like I'm there now. Especially since I was an intern at the Statesman and had a window on the third floor of that small slice of wall looking directly at downtown (just below the reflection of the sky between the two buildings in the river). #Nostalgia

That last pic is almost exactly the way Austin looked when I moved here. I thought downtown was just about perfect the way it was, and that's coming from someone who spent 2 - 3 weekends a month in NYC. If I measured the quality of the skyline as my reason to move here, I wouldn't have, it was the quality of Austin itself. I feel fortunate, as I'm sure Armybrat does to have witnessed first hand watching Austin grow from a few seedlings to a soaring forest, from a big town to a little big city or whatever declaration anyone want to call it. What would you guys call it today?

Found this picture I took in ~2009 of the W and Austonian still under construction. Apologies for the vintage cellphone quality.

Deep recession time, like free fall. I remember people saying the Austonian would sit empty, that they wouldn’t be able to afford to keep the power on.

I love this town. Austin Strong!

1986 - 301 Congress, 100 Congress, One Congress Plaza, and the San Jacinto Center were under construction.

I think it’s hilarious that it’s the Sesquicentennial celebration of Texas, and he’s in Mexican colors with a big Mexican flag hanging in the back. Even back then, Austin will be Austin.

Joe King played a middle school dance I attended back in ‘83. The administrators must have been so cool.

The caption says 1983, which is probably about right since one of the big state office buildings is missing from the Capitol complex that was built in 1985.

This is also back when the University Towers was one of few contributors to the West Campus skyline.
