Seems like there are a number of high-profile projects out of the spotlight at the moment. Anyone hear about what's happening with Portage Place? Hyatt Place on Portage Ave East? Bank of Montreal at P & M?

I asked a similar question recently and didn't get much response. More generalized to downtown. There doesn't seem to be much at the forefront. Wawanesa is moving. Noting happening with the earls land. The thing on Portage with the Boyd building seems dead or very quite. What else was their rumoured?

Trying to remember what's been said about all the different projects/rumors over the past few months

Someone (I think Biff or TV) mentioned that the Boyd Building or Don's Photo building project was dead...either due to personal reasons or being unable to get TIF grants

I assume nothing will happen with the Earls land until after they move in to their new location, so I would guess a few years

Portage Place recieved final approval from all levels of government to be sold to Starlight Investments end of August/early September, so they are likely doing due diligence now and working out what will and won't work

Who knows about Hyatt Place on Portage East...it seemed like work had stopped even before the huge fire

There had been a few other things that were hinted at, but I don't know which if those were revealed already or if any are still going forward...one may have been Wawanesa. I remember Biff asking hypothetically if we would rather see a development on Graham or on one of the MPI lots...not sure what became of that...

Outside downtown there is that large 2 tower development on South Pembina that is still making its way through the approval stage, going by what was last posted on here. There's been pretty steady stream of medium to large scale multi family building going up around the U of M so maybe we see something else there in the new year? Also a pretty large project in SmartPark is supposed to be revealed 'soon' but based on it being in SmartPark I'm more apprehensive than excited about that one...

If anybody has any clarifications/corrections/updates to the projects I mentioned, or any other rumors to toss out go for it!

^A few notables, even if not all new builds:

- NewPort construction is ongoing on the inside now. Whole tower is being upgraded. Skywalk through the building has been gutted. Podium work to continue in spring. Pretty prominent corner there so it should have a nice impact.

- 201 Portage renos have started. New podium and significant lobby and interior upgrades.

- 200 Portage renos well underway. Will result in a new streetfront entrance to Scotiabank on Main, and new restaurant/commercial unit on Portage.

- Residential/commercial conversion of the mostly abandoned 206-210 Princess cruising along. Most of the windows have been replaced and look fantastic.

- Old PSB demo has started. Marketlands is a huge development.

- Railside is massive, and should start in spring.

- Big changes to RWB, but likely a few years away still.

- Medical Arts and 185 Smith should both be coming on next year.

- Great West Metals project is quite substantial. There's a few other Exchange District properties that will likely see new developments announced next year, especially the ones orchestrated by CentreVenture.

All in all, even though we haven't had many singular tower (mega)project announcements lately aside from Wawanesa, there is a ton happening and about to begin. And as mentioned above, finding new uses or substantial remodels of existing buildings is equally important, arguably more important.

If the renders are accurate, the book store is being replaced by a 3 story addition, so it would make sense to leave the west side reclad for last.

There is a bunch of construction going on in the third (I believe) floor of Boyd. Can see it from the street.

I heard that there will be an announcement on Thursday regarding the Portage Place project. Big project, big money.

If what I know is true, the reactions on here will be "W T F" wow!

Biff don't do me like that. What a tease! Exciting nonetheless. Any idea whether renderings are included in this announcement?

^ You mean you didn't really just want to watch The Irishman for 3 and a half hours?

Anyway, this is (potentially) very exciting news... I am really interested in seeing the general direction they want to take the place. Does the "WTF" element have the potential to be negative, though?

I don't think so. Depends on your perspective. On this forum it will probably be applauded. My mouth dropped when I was told what I was told. We will have to see...(my source is 2 "in the know" people). I will have to see it to believe it.

I can't wait to see what it is, hard to think it could be as impressive as Biff is letting on. The pads can accommodate 17 storeys I believe. Two 17 storey buildings is awesome but to get a wow factor would take something special.

Just to recap, what was all part of the land sale? There was the mall with the parkades. Any surface lots in the deal?

Wild speculation (likely completely incorrect) but maybe the jaw dropping WTF moment will be that they plan to turn the mall back into an actual mall but bring in all the luxury brands that we don't have (and all the other 'big city' brands that we don't yet have here) to try and make it Winnipeg's Eaton Centre. Then maybe they plan on reinforcing the structure for the pads and going big on rentals like 2x 30 or something and bringing in some sort of major new tenants for some office. Sigh...

So something big and splashy but potentially divisive that may be applauded by us urbanists?

Could it be the long-desired FN-run Winnipeg casino? Or maybe not quite so controversial?
