ETA: Went by here today, and it's looking pretty cool. Apparently it's scheduled to open the day after Thanksgiving, and with free admission. Let's hope it's operated better than the Dia De Los Muertos festivities. I can see the powers that be underestimating the turnout.

However, I think it's a cool addition to our Downtown experience, and I hope it's successful and lasts for many years to come. As proud as I am of our older traditions, there is nothing wrong with introducing new ones.

That's actually quite amazing.

I knew Lake Flato was good, but that comes as a complete (albeit totally welcome) surprise.

Among the bad news, some good news

UTSA getting $111 million to lead Department of Energy project.

https://therivardreport.com/departme...ity-institute/

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has been selected to establish and lead a new $111 million federal research institute focusing on cybersecurity, energy efficiency, and creating manufacturing jobs, the university announced in a statement Wednesday.

UTSA will receive $70 million throughout a five-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to create the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CyManII).

As U.S. manufacturers increasingly include automation tools in their setups, new technologies must be embedded with powerful cybersecurity protections, said Howard Grimes, CyManII chief executive officer and UTSA associate vice president and associate vice provost for institutional initiatives.

“UTSA has assembled a team of best-in-class national laboratories, industry, nonprofit and academic organizations to cybersecure the U.S. manufacturing enterprise,” Grimes said in the UTSA statement. “Together, we will share the mission to protect the nation’s supply chains, preserve its critical infrastructure and boost its economy.”

In addition to the federal funding, the institute will be supported by $41 million from its partners, including the UT System’s commitment of $10 million.

Innovation hub coming to Port SA

Quote:
By Brandon Lingle, Staff writer | on August 15, 2020

Port San Antonio has the go-ahead to build a $60 million “innovation center” that its leaders hope will strengthen the business park’s drive to reinvent itself as a magnet for up-and-coming cybersecurity and tech companies.

The port’s board of directors approved the funding this week for the 130,000-square-foot facility, which will include an around-the-clock e-gaming stadium and a 2,500-seat arena.

Pabst Brewing moving headquarters to downtown San Antonio

SABJ

Pabst Brewing Company, the brewery behind brands like Lone Star and Pearl Beer, is moving into the Rand Building downtown.

Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation president and CEO, confirmed the news that Pabst would move into the building at 110 E. Houston St. Monday afternoon, saying Pabst’s headquarters move to San Antonio "sends a strong message that our region offers what HQs need to thrive as we continue to target California companies to relocate and expand."

Attempts to reach Pabst Brewing for comment were not returned by time of publication.

Pabst moved into the Weston Urban-owned building from California in 2019 to establish a regional office. It also shares the building with co-working space Geekdom. Saucedo-Herrera said when Pabst moved in 2019, it ignited a connection to downtown and the "vibrancy of our city’s entrepreneurial ecosystem."

Now the company is expanding into a full-sized headquarters space for its over 100 employees, according to the report.

"While the effects of Covid-19 are ongoing, Pabst’s confidence in San Antonio reinforces that our resilient economy is positioned to recover and emerge stronger," Saucedo-Herrera said.

OW lee to relocate HQ to Texas

ONTARIO, Calif. — Outdoor manufacturer OW Lee has tapped Comfort, Texas, outside of San Antonio, as its new home, marking the company’s first headquarters move out of California since its founding in 1947.

Currently based in Ontario, Calif., the announcement came after the company’s acquisition of a 412,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Texas.

“We chose to relocate to Texas due to the state’s favorable business incentives and policies, and for the central location for shipping,” saidTerri Lee Rogers, president and vice president of sales for the manufacturer. “The San Antonio area can meet our need for high quality metalworkers and welders, and we feel we can provide a good wage and be a positive business member in this community.”

The move will also more than double the company’s square footage, giving OW Lee 255,000 square feet more than at its current facility.

To prepare for its move, slated for January 2021, the company will spend the next four to six months installing a new paint line and performing various upgrades, with plans to be fully operational in the new facility by spring 2021.

Throughout this process, ownership of OW Lee will remain with the Lee family, and it “plans to continue their commitment to producing high-quality American-made outdoor furniture,” according to a release from the company. OW Lee was founded in Pasadena, Calif., by Oddist W. Lee in 1947.

Nielson recently released its Designated Market Area for 2020. San Antonio held its rank as the 31st largest media market in the US with 916,970 TV Homes, down from 923,990 homes in 2019.

Pertaining to the NBA, San Antonio is the 26th largest media market out of the 30 teams, just in front of Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, and Memphis.

If (big if) San Antonio receives an NFL Team, they would be ranked 26th largest market, out of 32 (33 counting SA), in front of Kansas City, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, Green Bay, Jacksonville, New Orleans and Buffalo. Larger markets without an NFL teams include Orlando, Sacramento, St Louis, Portland, Raleigh, San Diego and Salt Lake City.

In terms of the MLB, San Antonio would be ranked 28th out of 30 (31 counting SA) only in front of Kansas City and Cincinnati. Larger markets without MLB teams include Orlando, Sacramento, Charlotte, Portland, Indianapolis, Raleigh, Nashville, and Salt Lake City.

Very strange hot they rank markets. SA metro lost households... how? That’s very hard to believe also... why are we still doing tv markets when tv/cable are antiquated media.

Yea, that's really suspect. I think with other places they count
the whole region, where with SA, they count just SA. Our market for sports should be the whole AustAntonio region. People in Austin watch the Spurs! People in SA watch the Horns!

According to how they rank...

"Nielsen uses proprietary electronic measuring devices that measure what programs, networks, and stations family members watch on every TV and digital device in their home. Radio listening is also measured via similar devices and through diary entries. The company selects people and families and invites them to participate. The Nielsen panel members and “families” represent a cross-section of each market’s demographics, including ages, races, ethnicities, and behaviors.

Nielsen’s equipment detects audio codes to record the content that reaches each TV and device in the home. Depending on the market, Nielsen measures live content and on-demand, DVR, and streaming services. Their customized, exclusive software utilizes statistics and science to generate ratings."

San Antonio wasn't alone in losing TV houses in 2020. New York, Los Angeles, and even Austin lost TV households.

Also noticed the 2021 numbers are out

San Antonio still ranks at number 31 with 1,031,180, up from 916,970.

Salt Lake City, which is number 30, had 1,100,260, up from 952,470.

Austin moved up 2 spots in 2021 from 40 to 38. If you combine Austin and San Antonio media market (1,943,580 households) ranking it number 14 in the nation behind Tampa Bay and ahead of Minneapolis/St Paul.

If you're going to combine San Antonio and Austin, you have to combine Tampa and Orlando. They're the same distance apart. Just sayin'.

Balcones Heights confronts the future of Wonderland

From: SABJ
By W. Scott Bailey

Wonderland of the Americas is facing a midlife crisis. Having survived more than 60 years of demographic shifts and ownership changes, it’s now faced with an uncertain future.

Because its economic fortunes remain tethered to the mall, leaders in Balcones Heights are in talks with the property’s ownership about reinvention of the more than 30-acre site.

“It's a hard habit to break. But this really isn't a mall anymore,” said Lorenzo Nastasi, director of economic development the city of Balcones Heights, at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and Loop 410.

The 740,000-square-foot development, tucked between the freeway interchange and Fredericksburg Road, currently houses 78 businesses. Only 20 of them are considered medium to large retailers as Stein Mart was the latest to close its doors.

Much of the development’s square footage is now filled with a mix of health care providers and office space. There is also a food court and a movie theater operated by Santikos.

Balcones Heights Mayor Suzanne de Leon said she’d like to see a more expanded mix of tenants, including a regional restaurant row and residential space. She believes stakeholders could take some inspiration from the Pearl district, incorporating a craft brewpub or wine bar and even a farmer’s market into some of the space.

“Wonderland’s success has always been tied to the city's economic success because it is the largest property in Balcones Heights,” she said. “We think that that evolution is really a key to the future of the city. I believe this is more relevant now than ever before.”

There could be lingering temptation among some to hold on to the mall’s past as a retail center, but Nastasi believes the pandemic has caused developers and community leaders to be more creative.

“The return to retail as we knew it, there's a lot of skepticism about that,” he said.

Balcones Heights officials are optimistic as they note the limited partnership group headed by Sid Weiss which owns Wonderland, understands the need for change.

“We have to adapt,” de Leon said.

There will likely be more discussion about what Wonderland can become and what it should be called. The one conclusion so far, according to Nastasi, is that it’s “not a mall.”
