Gurgaon, India plans four 140-storey towers, highrise CBD

Gurgaon plans to build four 140-storey towers

GURGAON: You may think it's a tall story. But if Haryana government plans fall in place, the Millennium City will soon enter the skyscraper map of the world. In fact, right on top of the heap.

By 2010, the state government hopes to complete a world class Golden Triangle City Centre (GTCC) in Sector 29 with as many as four tallest buildings in the world.

Each of the proposed skyscrapers will be of 140 floors, taller than Taipei 101 which currently is the highest manmade structure on the planet.

Haryana's director, town and country planning (DTCP), has approached the Airport Authority of India for their clearance to the project.

Speaking to TOI, financial commissioner and principal secretary of DTCP, Shakuntala Jakhu, said: "We have already submitted the plan and design to AAI and are hoping to get the green signal soon."

The City Centre is to be developed as Gurgaon's prime commercial hub. It will have gardens, hospitality complex, office space and IT parks.

An integrated transport system, with Metro and light rail transit links, will connect the centre to Delhi and elsewhere.

But experts have added a note of caution. Gurgaon falls under Seismic Zone IV and any tall structure which doesn't factor in the earthquake hazard, could be inviting a huge risk.
For the uninitiated, Gurgaon (click for more info) (pop. 1.5 - 2 million people) is one of the four major fully planned satellite cities of India's National Capital region (i.e. Greater Delhi: including Delhi, New Delhi and the satellite cities of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and NOIDA.) All of these satellite cities are being developed as a planned economic nodes for NCR, complete with world-class infrastructure.

It should be noted that Noida also has a WTB proposal of 160 stories as the crown of its planned skyscraper-laden city center, due to be up by 2013 if all goes well. However, Noida's proposal is jammed up in city bureaucracy. It remains to be seen if it will get approved, even though city governing are in favor of it.

It would be very interesting for both Noida and Gurgaon to develop CBDs featuring skyscrapers. With both cities aiming to be the commercial/industrial nodes of NCR, they are already incredibly competative. Once they get into an equally competative skyscraper building spree, I'd love to see what becomes of it. Surely G'gaon announcing formal plans for the WTB would spur Noida to do a counter, or at least light a fire under those concered with approving the Noida Tower.

----=-=----

So will these get built? Who knows... there is a huge demand for commercial, residential and retail space in NCR which is no where near being met. The fact that both the state government and the city are in favor of it gives this project a big boost in the arm. That it has so much political backing makes it have a much better chance of seeing the light of day (and is at a further along stage!) than the Noida Tower, which encoutered opposition at even the city level.

I for one hope for it, though I'd put it at 'probable' for certain once the first major hurdle (Airport Authority of India clearance) is passed, hopefully soon.

Some more news on the "Golden Triangle City Centre" CBD planned in Gurgaon:

Monorail Project In Golden Triangle City Centre (GTCC) project in Sector 29

Haryana Govrnment has a monorail project in place for its Golden Triangle City Centre (GTCC) project in Sector 29. The centre will have both Metro and monorail connectivity. The government also plans to make it vehicle-free.

The consortium company of East China Architecture and Design Institute (ECADI) and India based Fairwood Consultants that is designing the proposed City Centre, has proposed the introduction of monorail or trams the Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) for local commutation.

HUDA Administrator S.P. Gupta said that the idea behind proposing monorail or any other similar mode of transport in GTCC was to introduce integrated transport system for people visiting this place.

"The objective is to minimise noise and air pollution. We want the visitors to walk less. We also plan to construct a number of multi-level parking lots so that the visitors could leave their own vehicles there and use alternate mode of transport for local commutation," the HUDA Administrator added.

According to a source, the consortium company has submitted Technical & Economical Feasibility Report (TEFR) with TCP department in which it had proposed introduction of either monorail or LRTS such as trams.

The road length between RITES building and Signature Tower, where GTCC is proposed to be coming up, is about 1.75 km.

The area of GTCC is quite large measuring about 380 acres and would have world-class entertainment, retail, business facilities such as malls, multiplexes, hotels, state-of-the-art commercial and office complexes.

It would have next to it the main bus stand of the city.

According to officials, the Metro train alone would not be able meet the demand.

"The consortium company has proposed about 5.5 km long track for of monorail or trams the Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) for local commutation on the lines of Kuala-Lampur and Sydney. GTCC would have designated parking lots where the visitors would be required to park their vehicles. For local commutation they would have alternatives such as Monorail or trams," the official added.

These modes of transport require very less space.

For example, monorail runs on a beam of the size of two by two feet on the elevated track, said the official.

The secretary of Town & Country Planning department, Haryana Government, Shakuntala Jakhu told the Hindustan Times that her department was seriously considering various modes of local commutation in GTCC. "We are working on it though it's yet to be finalised," she said.

Ok, first off, looks like the CBD's project designers are ECADI (East China Architecture and Design Institute) (Google Translated Version), and Fairwood Consultants.

Secondly, not only will this GTCC have Delhi Metro connectivity, but will also have its own monorail. It is VERY cool that this CBD will be a "vehicle-free" zone. No cars not only means less pollution, but will free up a heck of a lot of space for parks, gardens, etc. No automobile roads also makes for potentially greater density for the CBD! (yay!)

I would wonder how the no-cars, only-metro/monorail plans will incorporate the potential spreading out of the CBD in the future? Will its boundaries be pre-planned and artificially restricted? Or will it be flexable enough to allow medium-term future skyscraper growth in the CBD. All this makes we wonder if the CBD will be a very centerally planned thing along the lines of the ME and China's mega-projects. I've always found those types of CBDs to look way to artificial and bland, with none of the beautiful spontinaity of architecture and design that naturally developed skylines, like New York -- or Mumbai for that matter -- have.

I do hope the designs of all those buildings will not go to just one consortium of builders, planners or architects, like Noida is supposed to. Variety in design and chaos in the city rather than mega urban planned asthetics make for a really vibrant city.

That's crazy.
I'd be very surprised if the whole project was completed by 2010.

I hope this doesn't turn into another Noida tower. Gurgaon would need to upgrade its Fire Dept. before they think of breaching 100 stories.

Considering the level of red tape, corruption and populism rampant in Indian politics, are enough factors to make these just pipe dreams, let alone going into economics and other factors.

They mistakenly said Taipei 101 was the tallest man made structure in the world, it's the tallest building until BD gets a few floors higher.

This is interesting. I've been waiting for India to put out its entries for WTBs. I'm real interested in where they get their design influences from.

So it was not a mistake at all, it was completely accurate.

This is an interesting proposal, but I just can't see this project becoming a reality.

No, Taipei 101 is far from the tallest man made structure on Earth.

As I understand it, there is one oil platform that's higher but the CN tower is it on land...so far.

If you mean the tallest structure currently completed not counting oil drilling stations in the ocean, then yes.
