Beautiful tower, but why couldn't they have built it downtown?

Downtown where? There aren't any sites available (other than the WTC) for a tower of this size.

Don't worry, Downtown (or rather Midtown) will follow.

construction

hi guys. does somebody know when construction will begin? I think, the tower is planned to be complete in 2011. The time remaining is most likely not enough to built a tower of this size.

Bloomberg heads underground for 7 train extension

By TOM NAMAKO
February 3, 2010

Manhattan straphangers, meet your newest subway stop.

MTA brass yesterday revealed the incredible underground cavern that in several years will become the 34th Street top platform on the 7 line.

Cut 110 feet under Eleventh Avenue, the space — essentially a pit of mud and concrete right now — is housing several massive tunnel-boring machines that are working their way to 42nd Street, where the line currently ends.

Mayor Bloomberg said he hopes the $2.1 billion subway extension — funded by city taxpayer money — will lead to a spate of economic development on Manhattan’s West Side.

"The far west side never had mass transit before," he said inside the cavern. "The sandhogs deserve a lot of credit."

Bloomberg also addressed questions about the project coming in on-time and on-budget.

When asked about a recent independent engineer’s report that said the project could be delayed from its December 2013 opening into 2014, Bloomberg said, "I don’t know. If it takes into 2014, as long as we do it safe, that’s the most important thing."

on the new No. 7 subway line stop at 34th Street and 11th Avenue.

Huh? If anything, it should be called "Wish we had the mayor visit every day. We get a nice break to stand around, not do anything and drink coffee while we still get paid in our overinflated union wages. This is pretty sweet"

So at what stage of the 7 line construction is foundation work for the tower possible.

Good image. Do they work on the foundation at the time?

I'm not sure, but the tunnel has been dug, and is actually to the west of the foundation for the tower (as well as the former WPC site).

My guess is construction is a few years away, considering the extension on the 7 line would have to be completed first.

I don't hope so, but nobody knows... After my knowledge the proposed completion is 2013.
