Is this on the site of the old Embarcadero plan?

I believe so. It's the same group building this one, but based on the location it looks like they aren't using the whole lot. Maybe saving room for later construction unless that was the size of the old plan too. But instead of 24 condos it will now be 131 "transient guestrooms".

I see it's a Wyndham Garden hotel. Pretty good catch for River North, though I hate that it's solely a hotel. Maybe the other half of the property will be for a residential tower? Fingers crossed. lol

With regard to the Embarcadero project. That was going to be on 2 acres. This hotel will be on 1.3 acres.

However, the lot next to it, the "other half" is owned by SAHA and not Paradigm Development which owns the hotel site.

The SAHA lot is 2.5 acres alone.

So maybe SAHA and Paradigm teamed up and then that feel through, idk.

But it's in SAHA's best interest to sell the land or build on it, preferably a mid-rise, maybe high-rise, residential development that has a good mix and balance of priced units.

It's so ugly.

Also it's about the last thing river north needs. Creation of a neighborhood infrastructure and amenities for local residents will not be achieved by lining the river with hotels, but if multinational corporate chain developers have their way that's exactly what we'll get.

Kind of thought why another hotel in this area, it should be mixed use, residential, retail, and business. and a few stories taller. Its a great location.

It is the last thing it needs, but it still needs it. Right now the rental units greatly outnumber the hotel rooms in RN, and even though the streetcar will give a way for tourists to spend their $$ in RN, a hotel spotted here and there won't hurt.
It is kind of ugly, but thats kind of the normal "look" here in SA.
I was more concerned with how it met the street, the amount of parking (hopefully not too much) and how it would affect the sidewalk traffic. It also seems that the space for retail that would be along 9th, is not a hotel restaurant but just a "lease space" which is good because it leaves it open to meet the demands of the neighborhood as it changes and not a fixed tenant. The space has good access from the street and river level.

SKW: I think that the "old" plan had 9th rerouted straight to St. Mary's and that's how that other .7 acre came from.

Did the hotel get HDRC approval?

I believe that they approved of the concept, and that they just thought the "tower" should be a bit more prominent, if I read it correctly.

They thought the pillars supporting the central tower were too thin, and I agree. The entire design is so inauthentic that it looks like an outlet mall by the interstate.

That's exactly what I thought Spoiler. They need to revamp the design and make it a bit more, "flashy" but not tacky. This is a section of the river that needs to be done right.

I agree about those pillars too. I also think that green sign on the top right throws off the balance of the building. For the most part it looks pretty good.

From today's HDRC agenda, an image of the revised plan for the River North hotel:

It looks a little less ridiculous.

The full agenda is here: http://www.sanantonio.gov/historic/hdrc.aspx

The hotel is in "cases 4-7". There's a lot of interesting stuff on the agenda.

I just wish it was a little taller. At least 7 or 8 stories would be awesome.

Seems like 4 stories is the going rate right now on River North.
Here is a recent proposal (to HDRC) for 25,000 sq. ft. of office space along 4 floors. It will be right across 9th St. from the Wyndham Hotel but have an address along Arden which is the street that makes the "Y" with 9th that ends up looking at Steve Browne's tomato garden.
Phipps office building.

from HDRC agenda.
http://www.sanantonio.gov/historic/D...rden_Grove.pdf

It doesn't seem like much, but with these two going up right up next to St. Mary's, Edwards Aquifer Authority offices expansion going up (under construction) and Generations FCU building on the other side of 35, it'll add a bit of that new building smell to N. St. Mary's to make it a bit more inviting to the possibility to more investment in the area.

Is the Generations building going up on the east side of St Mary's north of the interstate?

Interesting, The design of the building seems nice, if only it was at least 3 floors taller and had some sort of venue on the river(as far as I can tell, there is nothing)

I'm not liking the parking lot either, but over all, it is better then an open field

Yes, on the block by Newell and St. Mary's.

I like the modern design. They are only taking up a portion of the lot there is still more room to add something else.

I am not surprised that its only 4 floors because its right next to the river, although 7 or 8 would be nice...

Hopefully more stuff will start to flow...
