There’s been no word on this for over a year now I’d assume it’s toast.

The no vote on Portage and Main likely didn't help.

I wonder if there's a chance that we'll see another new hotel project of some sort? I still find it surprising that the P&M hotel project from a few years ago never took off... we don't really have a top-line business hotel with one of the major chains. The Delta, Fairmont and Radisson are all pretty long in the tooth and outdated. I thought that Le Meridien plan from a few years back had great potential... it would have become the slam dunk place to stay for most downtown business travellers.

If any of the businesses surrounding Portage and Main would be willing to confirm that they halted or didn't go through with planned renovations or development projects just because Portage and Main didn't get opened up, the City could easily do a cost/benefit analysis in retrospect. If it turns out that the forgone property tax revenue over X period of years outweighs the cost of tearing down the barriers and additional congestion over X period of years, then perhaps even the baby-boomer suburban fiscal conservatives could be convinced that it may have actually been a good thing.

^Harvard. Owners of 201 Portage said this explicitly regarding the undeveloped land.

Really? Do you have a source? Not that I'm saying your lying, but I do find it hard to believe that the decision to not build a 20+ story office/residential/hotel tower on the gravel lot beside 201 Portage was entirely predicated on whether or not pedestrians could cross the street a hundred feet away. But I'm open to be shown otherwise.

But if you are right and opening P&M would have caused Harvard to build a structure even half the size of 201 Portage, then the City would have added $500,000 a year to it's assessment roll, meaning that the cost of tearing down the barriers would be paid for within 20 years or so by this one new structure alone.

Please, it's a thread, not a sub, we're not reddit!

You have no idea how deep the backwards thinking runs here. We had a transit executive say on the record that people dont want free wifi on city buses since data plans are so common.

A good example of the profound resistance to change here that runs deeper than in most other places.

I believe that mindset won't be prevalent for long. So much progress going on

I agree it's crazy we don't have a true business hotel downtown, specifically on the Marriott-SPG points system (by far the largest in the world). However, the Delta did a top-to-bottom reno a couple years ago. Another banner under Marriott would probably be an instant success here as MANY companies require their staff to book at those hotels, unless there's no other option. If it were to be a Westin, they would automatically get all the NHL business too.

I know TNSE is close with Northlands and that's why we're getting a Sutton Place, but a Marriott-owned banner would have made soooo much more sense.

Delta is under Marriott brand.

A Westin or Meridien would be nice.

Apparently a lawyer in Ontario is in hot water because he told investors in the syndicated mortgage that the property was valued at 6 times its appraisal.
Sounds like theres all sorts of funny business surrounding this project. Hopefully the owners can find a way to complete it but I have my doubts. Theres a story about it on CBC
