Illinois approves a new casino in City of Chicago

The casino approved will allow 4,000 gambling slots, essentially allowing a casino as large as some of the major ones on the Las Vegas strip.

This legislation will make Chicago the 1st major American city to have a huge casino.

Quote:
(Bloomberg) — Illinois legislators approved a giant gambling-expansion bill that allows sports betting and as many as six new casinos, including one in Chicago, one of the world’s busiest tourism and convention cities.

The legislation, which still must be signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, also lets the state’s 10 existing casinos increase their slot machines and table games by almost 70%. And it allows the state’s three horse tracks to offer slot machines and table games such as blackjack and craps. The ultimate recipient of the Chicago license will also be able to operate slot machines at the city’s O’Hare International and Midway airports.

^ I guess the emphasis should be that this would be the largest US city with a casino

Milwaukee already has one: the Potawatomi Casino, which is currently undergoing a large expansion. it's nice that Chicago is following Milwaukee's lead. Again.

And St Louis has the riverboat casinos.

^ I have yet to go to Potawatomi....

I have yet to go to the NW Indiana casinos

Hell, I have yet to go to the casino in Des Plaines.

Reality is, I'm just not that into casinos. But obviously plenty of people are, because they are huge money makers...

^^ oh yeah, i forgot about Potawatomi Casino in milwaukee.

that's the closest thing to a vegas-scale casino that i've ever experienced outside of vegas.

i'm not huge on casinos either, but as long as they place this thing near mccormick place to separate conventioneers from their money, it sounds like a good idea to me.

me, either. even going to Las Vegas, I spent most of my time on the golf course, in the restaurants, and at the shows. I'm just not a gambler.

What about Resorts World in NYC? LA area also has a bunch of casinos. The LA poker scene is huge. Bigger than Vegas.

The current convention center building would work great as a casino.

^ We don't know where the Chicago casino will be.

If it's located in or around downtown, that would be something noteworthy, analogous to NYC putting a casino in Manhattan.

Isn't Chicago tearing down some building on the lakeside portion of LSD that has something to do with the convention center? That spot would be great. Close enough to be reached from the growing south loop neighborhood while also physically being separated from the neighborhood, which could at least psychologically help with the perceived stigma of crime from casinos.

I love gambling. An area with casinos is very attractive to me. However, my concern is the placement of casinos since they do act as fortresses(terrible for the urban environment). Lucky for Chicago, they have plenty of development spots that won't destroy blocks of the city already existing.

There's two downtown not several, and another one outside of it. I don't think they're anywhere near as large as the big boys in Vegas if we're talking about size.

Didn't Boston just build a casino that's literally a Vegas copy? Is this a trend?

Resorts World isn't a full service casino. It's only allowed to have electronic gaming.

Don't all states with legal weed have gambling?

Why do local and state governments put dumb arbitrary limits on these types of things?

What is the difference from a slot machine and a blackjack table?

Sounds like the state really needs money!

On a side note, congrats with the legal weed. I only wish my state would do the same.

Seems about time to buy my Chicago condo on a side note. Was thinking Englewood.

We in NJ have Atlantic City as our gambling mecca, but its kinda run down. Its no Vegas. But will provide some fun at times.

Pretty sure that was the Native tribe lobby behind not putting a full service casino in NYC. A full casino would be a huge blow to their casinos upstate and in New England.

No, it was Cuomo. He has refused to allow table games within proximity of the city for fear the Catskills/Upstate casinos would be harmed. Resorts World is the highest grossing casino in the U.S. and I believe Empire City is second. Neither have table games.

The native casinos in NY State aren't really in the same market. Their big casinos are in Central/Western NY State.
