I see workers out there every day. At the moment, I see one the the roof, a few working on a balcony, a few on the pool level, and a few at street level. It's hard to judge how fast things are progressing as compared to before, but work definitely hasn't stopped.

Visible work always seems to slow down once a building is topped out. Look at how long the North and West facades on Fifth and West took. There is most likely lots of progress happening inside.

Have you been to the Hotel ZaZa in Houston or Dallas? They are incredible hotels - a step ahead of the W or similar. It's a good thing we are getting one - can't wait to see the finished product.

I typically agree with Major Healy, but I think you got this wrong. Zaza certainly comes across as pretentious..., they set high expectations, but in my experiences, the’ve delivered.

Not Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, but damn good! Far better than any W (club dub), I’ve stayed.

Drove around the block this afternoon around 230PM. It was a beehive of activity on the ground level. A dozen or so workers and the sounds of hammering and concrete drilling. Hopefully there is similar activity upstairs. Still, a May opening seems unlikely. Maybe in the late summer or fall?

I drove by this afternoon a little after 4 and saw some construction workers leaving the premises. As others have said, there's still activity going on, likely moreso inside than out.

I must admit, I didn't make the connection of what Dcbrickley meant by "Major Healy" until ahealy posted the gif. I had to kick myself.

That show was always a one-two punch for me. Jeanie, and all the nerdy Nasa rocket stuff. Ah, the 60s.

So interesting. I bet people will move here in 2019 and have no idea that this building hasn't been around for years.

I like the idea of timelessness in architecture. Wish more architecture firms would strive for that.

I was recently leading a tour of Downtown for dignitaries from around the country. One of them asked me what was going on with that 'old' building when looking at the Zaza.

The retroiest thing about it IMO is that indentation on the north facing side of the building. It's essentially an airshaft that a modern building with AC doesn't need. And yet, ZaZa's out there doing it like it's still 1924.

They also needed somewhere to place the pool for the hotel. I don’t think that pool will ever see sun. Especially if something goes up at the SW corner of 5th and Lavaca

If the discoloration and stains on the brick was a natural patina and caused by age and weathering, I'd give it a thumbs up and wish they would power wash the entire exterior, but its not, and I would expect they will power wash the exterior. Aside from the fact that its apparent the design was never meant to look modern, what makes it look old is how crappy the brick looks right now. The stains and discoloration just makes it look prematurely old AND neglected. While I like the style of the building, the exterior looks shitty to me. And I'm still reeling over the above ground parking. As I recall, they said it would all be underground out of respect for the park and surrounding neighbors. They lied. They hit water and took the cheap way out.

Not an air shaft but probably more for access to light.

The power wash will do a lot for the brick, too.
