QUÉBEC, la vieille capitale

As a new resident of the greater Québec area, I have the chance to go frequently in this captivating city. There's much more to Quebec City (as the anglos call it) than its walled city; it features a number of 18th and 19th centuries suburbs made of narrow streets, variegated working-class housing (St-Jean-Baptiste, St-Roch, St-Sauveur), rows of 3-storey plexes (Limoilou) or more affluent pockets (Montcalm).

Here's a small part of the suburb of Saint-Roch. I walked from its centre to the St. Lawrence river, at Louise basin, where the views over the old city are remarkable. Enjoy!

Thanks for posting these! I found myself captivated by the St-Jean-Baptiste neighborhood on Google street view after FrAnKs posted photos of the more "touristique" parts of town.

Let me try this without Google translate: Merci pour poster cettes photos! Je me suis trouvé captivé par le quartier St-Jean-Baptiste sur "Google street view" après que FrAnKs a posté des photos des parties les plus touristiques de la ville.

I wanted to go out for a few beers in St-Roch when I was there a few years ago, but ended up going to a pub in St-Jean.

If it's the district, it would be ''St-Jean Baptiste''.

The district, but I think the pub was right around the corner from the street.

Kind of!
There's even ice fishing over the basin during the colder months of winter (see the link). I wouldn't risk it in March though. The weather is mild, and ice gets softer and thinner.

I'll do it for sure. With the good weather that came back, I'll go to Québec more often.

Here are some pictures that I posted in the canadian forum this week. They were taken last weekend. The old city was almost desert compared to every other spring.

One thing that surprised me was the quasi absence of cars parked or circulating on the streets. It was way easier to observe and photograph the buildings. It's a really good time for lonely walks and photography for sure.

MONTCALM, ST-JEAN-BAPTISTE, A WALK ON THE WALLS & THE PLAINS

What a wonderful day in Québec!
I decided to walk throughout the city, caméra en main, to capture some of its summer energy.

Montcalm district
The first couple of pictures are showing both sides of the district of Montcalm; the posh homes of public servants and the popular streets and walk-ups bustling with college and university students.

Around the Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec

Back in Montcalm, around Cartier Street

ST-JEAN-BAPTISTE, a cultural & popular neighbourhood
St-Jean-Baptiste is one of the first areas that has been developed outside of the walls in Québec. It is home to Québec's artistic and LGBTQ community (though St-Sauveur tends to become more popular nowadays).

The heart of the district is St-Jean street, a must-see if you come to Québec someday.

WALKING ON THE WALLS, to the CITADEL
The old city walls are the ideal walk at the end of the day. They offer a plethora of unusual vistas of the old city, the Laurentian hills, the lower part of the city, the parliament hill... They are the ideal spot to appreciate a good summer sunset. One could walk on the walls from St-Jean street straight up to the Citadel and the Plains of Abraham (plaines d'Abraham), the city's largest urban park.
