I dont know is anyone else going to feel funny once the roof is done. Its like our whole lives its been a marshmallow and now its just gonna change... Seeing pictures in 10-20 years is going to be kind of weird.

Pic from co-worker's condo - August 5, 2010:
(two pics merged because his wide angle isn't wide enough)

Also, there area a bunch of stories in the papers about the roof - guess they had the news conference planned for well after they knew everything was OK with the first mast.

Terry Fox Memorial (arch) will be taken down and the plaza redeveloped with a new Terry Fox Memorial.

Awesome photos OD, thank you for posting these!

'New Terry Fox Memorial'???? Oh I hope they actually make a nice one instead of merely moving/replicating the existing one. I have no idea how that monstrosity of a design was ever allowed to be created.

Likewise. I always thought that design was woefully inadequate for one of Canada's greatest (if not the greatest) heroes.

Who knows, why do I suspect that the new one will be a "memorial wall"?

they talked about it on global news most of the on the street interviews were pissed that the memorial was being taken away and said its just not right - i don't think the news mentioned that a new one was going to be replacing the existing one

awesome!

Of course not. How could they manufacture outrage....

Great news about the memorial. That design was some kind of sick joke on Vancouver and Terry Fox.

okay, let's not go crazy.

but i think the designer focussed too much on making something current (don't forget this was the dreadful 80's) rather than something that was timeless as a memorial should be.

I thought the same thing after hearing about this on the news. I couldn't believe that some of the people interviewed were actually upset to hear this disgrace is being torn down. Rebuilding the Terry Fox Plaza is a great opportunity to honour this local icon with a monument that better represents the accomplishment. The current Terry Fox monument is embarrassing it should be replaced with a landmark that tourist will want to visit.

I'll be kind. I was thinking more Burrard Bridge like, with a hint of Japanese window screens. I can't imagine there was any design competition back then. I think a carpenter probably drew it on a paper towel and handed it to the foreman...

paper towel is too kind.

I think it was planned out with a stick and a bed of sand.......

I also thought it was just some Chinese thing. I used to work in the plaza of nations and had no idea until just now that it was supposed to be a Terry Fox memorial, even though I knew the name of the plaza.

I'm old enough to remember when the Terry Fox Memorial was put up. Believe me, it wasn't well received. I think people were just as confused about it then as they are now. You can cite 'crappy 80s aesthetic' but even back then I don't think anyone really thought it was attractive in any way.

There was speculation at the time about what could be up on the 2nd floor behind those Asian-styled windows. Makes you wonder, what exactly is up there???
