Here is an old one: Detroit's first steel framed office tower, the 13 story Chamber of Commerce building completed in 1895 (it is now 114 years old and while modified, remains intact). Note: Sometimes the 10 story Hammond Building (1889) is called Detroit's first Skyscraper (the definition has changed over the years) but it had load bearing masonry walls.

DALLAS:

How'd they get that Mercantile Building out of the ground in 1942, right in the middle of WW2? I always thought next to nothing was constructed domestically during this time.

From wiki...

Quote:
The Mercantile National Bank tower was completed in 1942 and was the only major skyscraper constructed during World War II. The U.S. government had called for a halt of private construction to fuel supply materials for the war effort. However, most of the tower's steel had been prefabricated and was given a special waiver from the government. The bank lobby Art Deco wood murals were the largest in the world at the time.[2]In addition to the bank and other offices, the federal government took 10 floors to office various war agencies. Mercantile Bank owner and founder Robert L. Thornton constructed his own penthouse level in the upper floors.

Interesting to see the growth of Cesars Palace. The original semi-circular tower and lowrise portions still exist today but their appearance has been radically altered.

More LA..

Union Bank (and a few other towers) under construction

Arco Towers

Downtown in the mid 60's. Notice the Convention Center under construction and the vast emptiness of the Bunker Hill Redevelopment

Downtown circa 1973 (Note AON Center and B of A Plaza under construction)

Downtown circa 1986 with the Wedbush building under construction. The Pac Bell building on the left is now 1010 Wilshire.

^THAT is a badass photo.

Here's the best UC photo I can find for my tiny hamlet of Aliquippa, PA.

A one story Arby's under construction:

Rumor has it that a roofer was preparing for the topping off ceremony and he fell all the way to the ground sustaining a semi-serious scrape on one of his elbows.
