Hey guys. Happened upon something unusual when browsing the construction cams of CBG Building Company. Check out "South Alex - View 1" between 9:45 - 10:30 am Saturday, Feb. 8.

https://app.oxblue.com/open/cbgbc

For those not familiar with how to change the date/time of the cam, just click the date/time near the top left and then select the day, and then the time.

Update: The cams for the South Alex project have been locked. What happened was a fire broke out, engulfing a section of the project. It was a major fire. The wood framework and cladding completely burned down to the second floor concrete podium. From what I could see, other sections of the project seemed to be OK. No doubt authorities will be scrutinizing the cam pictures to determine the fire's cause.

Here's the CBGBC link to the project:

https://www.cbgbuildingcompany.com/P...ect/South-Alex

Update #2: The Washington Post has uploaded a story on the fire. Here's the link:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...7eb_story.html

Update #3: Videos of the fire uploaded to YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GaBt6AcpHU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW3crg13_fU

The area where the fire occurred — the 2800 block of Poag Street — is in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, VA, located just outside the Beltway. Virtually the entire structure appears to have been destroyed. Here's another report with a bunch of pictures:

Metro headquarters to transform into a modern commercial office building

Washington Post

"Metro has reached a deal to lease its soon-to-be vacated downtown headquarters to a development group that will remake the nearly 40-year-old building into a modern commercial office space that could house more than 1,500 employees and bring new life to solemn Judiciary Square, according to a proposal to be presented to the board this week.

The transit agency has selected the development team of Stonebridge, a regional development group building a $300 million tower in downtown Bethesda, and Rockefeller Group, a national company behind some of New York’s foremost landmarks as well as the Boro tower in Tysons.

The group has agreed to a 99-year lease of the Jackson Graham Building, just across from the Capital One Arena, that could pay Metro upward of $130 million over the duration of the contract, agency officials said..."

Thanks 202 Cyclist. Although the project itself is a big disappointment. It's just going to be an expanded 9-5 office building for trade associations and lobbyist. This was one of the last big parcels to add more housing in the DT core. Oh well.

I think it will be an improvement. The article says the developer will add another three floors. The new WMATA headquarters will also add another three floors. This means more employees in the downtown core of DC and at L'Enfant. According to the article, the developer will also be adding retail to Jackson building.

Additionally, two dated, 1960s-era buildings will be transformed to energy-efficient buildings and both buildings will generate new revenue for WMATA.

Looks like this is moving forward..

Hanover Closes Land Buy, Construction Loan For 377-Unit Brookland Project
Jon Banister, Bisnow Washington, D.C.

Quote:
A development that would add nearly 400 units to Northeast D.C.'s Brookland neighborhood appears to be moving forward. Hanover Co. last week closed on the acquisition of two adjacent properties at 3135 and 3201 Eighth St. NE, and it received a construction loan for its two-building apartment project.

I took this photo yesterday of the conversion of a bland 1960s-era office building into what will be the new WMATA headquarters. The new headquarters will be a modern, energy-efficient, building.

Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard

Construction has started on the Parcel I residential development, which is located next to New Jersey and N Street, SE, near Nats Park. Nearly 350 apartments will be built. The tower crane in the background is for the Chemnomics headquarters. JD Land has renderings and more information about the project.

I took this photo yesterday morning.

I took this photo yesterday morning of the former CSX site, where two residential buildings and a hotel will be built. This is immediately south of I-395 and next to NJ Ave, SE. Two tower cranes were installed last week.

I took these photos this weekend (while a safe distance from other people walking around).

This is a 315-unit residential development at 301 G Street, SW.

WMATA chiller site (Half and L Street, SE). 161 apartments are being built.

L'Enfant Plaza

This site is about one block directly south of the Smithsonian metro station. This is excellent news, as it will bring more vitality to an area that is largely vacant in the evenings and on weekends. The Spy Museum, Bible Museum, a refurbished hotel at L'Enfant Plaza, and spillover traffic from the Wharf are also helping to add pedestrian activity to this area.

Here's the plan for that former GSA site in Southwest D.C.

I think the 11th Street Bridge needs a much larger barrier between it and the highway bridge. Otherwise, it will be too damn loud on the bridge.

Speaking of barriers - why can't DC add a barrier to 295 throughout the District? That would make the ART more pleasant.
