Who still uses "stick framing" (wood) when supporting suspended slab construction anymore? That's big-time old-school way of doing things. Like, 20+ years ago way of doing things!
I know, it works, companies had been doing it that way for decades. Must be a smaller mom/pop shop company.
Good for them on the work, but you won't catch my butt walking around on elevated decks like that anymore...

I like the design. Mainly the brick and the pointed roofs.

Posting this in the Highland Mall thread rather than the N Austin thread... this is in the Highland neighborhood, so I think it makes more sense to group it with the developments right around the corner (as well as those in Crestview just across Lamar) than with the Domain and farther-flung N Austin projects. But here's progress on "St. John's West" at Guadalupe and St. John's:

It will be interesting to see how it interacts with the Crescent, which is now bursting with activity thanks to the 99 Ranch and the new Asian restaurants coming in. It's really a unique (to Austin) kind of place now.

The Red Velvet events space looks like it may be open now too. It will be interesting to see what they bring to the area. Idk if anyone else has been by, but they have a big Jackalope statue facing Lamar which is pretty cool.

I also, while walking to Royal Jelly last night (a cute little neighborhood cocktail pub if you're ever around there) noticed that the Texas DPS credit union parking lot was torn up and the building was shut down. Could just be maintenance work, but I also wouldn't be surprised if this was about to go multifamily as well. This area is really about to blow up, I think.

Awesome post and update, myBrain. I always thought that Crestview Station, Highland, Mueller, North Loop and the Triangle's close proximity to each other, and to both the North Lamar and Airport corridors, would ultimately lead to exactly what you are describing. The areas will support density on neighboring lots and blocks and eventually bleed into each other, creating a dense core North Austin. As a larger area, it really has one of the biggest capacities to add retail and residential density if there ever was such a place.

Maybe I don't understand the perspective because I don't live around there but in my mind it doesn't make sense to group Mueller with those places.

I visit Mueller a lot and it has a feeling of being kinda divorced from the rest of North Austin; maybe because it has a buffer of big box stores, conveniently-placed parks, and a highway in-between. Of course, that can change if the Airport corridor develops more and the area within the triangle of I-35, 290, and Cameron is radically gentrified. But that's a long way off.

I wish they had integrated Mueller more with the surrounding area but I can also see why some wouldn't want that, in that area.

Highland, though, I'm excited about. It has so much potential and it's right in the middle of everything.

....I was at Royal Jelly last night too....

Yeah, The Crescent is exploding with potential (and activity) right now. I really hope to see smaller boutique hotels pop up around there, especially with event spaces like Red Velvet and Peached Hose or whatever opening up.

I soooo wish my company would refurbish and manage the Texan Motel and Mehl's into a nice lil' updated establishments. I. would. faint.

The San Jose on South Congress is what started it all down there...maybe refurbishing these motels would plant the seed for a N. Lamar explosion!

I wonder if it's possible to ever bury those high voltage lines over N. Lamar. They are so huge and overpowering (LOL) over the street.

Yes! The company I work for manages the San Jose (and Austin Motel/Saint Cecilia) I soooo wish we'd take those over.
