Saturday Driving - St. John's, Trinity, Bonavista, King's Cove
Yesterday a friend, my usual hiking partner, and I decided to take it easy and spend the summer day driving around the Bonavista Peninsula - hoping to see a few icebergs and whales.
It's a scenic drive north:

We got up at 5:30 a.m. to watch the sunrise in St. John's before setting out.
Bungalows are laying siege to the city.

Fort Amherst in the foreground, and Cape Spear in the background. Both have American military ruins along the water's edge that look awful but are fun to explore. Cape Spear is as far east as you can go in North America if you ignore Greenland, etc., which everyone does.

The bungalows really are encroaching on the core.

Our first stop was Trinity, a tourist town with a few hundred year-round residents.

Trinity East is on the other side of the harbour. When boats were the only form of transportation here, they functioned as a single community. Now you have to drive the back road to get there so they're really separate towns in daily life.

Nearby Dunfield hasn't fared as well as Trinity. It's on the way from the lighthouse back to the town.

Some day on clothes is a local expression that means it's hot with a breeze. This is why.

Next stop was Port Union, "Canada's Only Union-Founded Town" . It didn't really work.

And then the beautiful sight of Bonavista, which means beautiful sight. Here, they say, is where John Cabot made his landfall in 1497. It's one of the only rural areas that is growing here. Two dozen businesses over the past two years - everyone loves it, even with the hipsters.

If I had a dollar for every time someone pointed and shouted, "SEAL!", I'd have about $20.
