The outboard sidewalks could be removed, saving a bit of weigh. the only issue is the deck, which is steel precicely because it's lighter thn concrete or asphault. I'm sure that there's a composite deck out there that would do the job for non-motorized (and light maintenance vehicles, but not big rigs) traffic and weigh less than the current steel deck.

Feds to build new St. Lawrence bridge crossing in Montreal
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/...512/story.html

I realize that the Champlain Bridge is federally owned, but it would be nice if the Feds would also chip in for the new Walterdale.

I do believe the bridge is owned by a crown corporation.

There still aren't plans to start construction on this new bridge (unless I forgot to read something), so I'm wondering how will this replacement be completed by the 2014 date? I am not an expert in construction timelines, but surely a fancy new bridge can't be done in 2 years (considering it isn't going to start in 2011) right?

Design through 2012, construction 2013-14.

They have shot and planted markers in some areas already.

Keep in mind no mid span support and quite large structural pieces...

And perhaps more importantly, doesn't have to be staged to accomodate existing traffic.

City proposes borrowing $132M to build new Walterdale Bridge
By Gordon Kent, edmontonjournal.com November 25, 2011 12:26 PM

EDMONTON - The city might have found a way to free up money to spend on extra construction and equipment projects over the next three years, but it means higher taxes in future.

Debate is set to start Friday afternoon on a pared-down capital budget in which roadwork, street light rehabilitation, improvements to the bus and LRT fleet, and many other renewal priorities are postponed until at least 2015.

^ so...... I was under the assumption that the bridge would be paid for by MSI? or AMIP?
I'm just throwing this out there, but could this be smoke and mirrors to use MSI to pay for the arena? Borrow for the bridge to free up MSI for the arena?

^me neither. Also, the landscaping will be done so that on the north side there will be boulders and concrete stairs flanking the bridge so people can get down to the river.

I also like the reclamation of the generator station land.
