The University of Texas System’s once-stalled plan to build a new headquarters in downtown Austin is moving forward — albeit four stories taller and 30 percent more expensive than originally planned, and with some last-minute design issues raised by two regents.
The Board of Regents’ facilities committee on Wednesday approved the expansion to 19 stories and $133.1 million, and the full board is expected to sign off Thursday.

A. Contractor to install covered walkways and water filled barriers at the project perimeter as shown in the attached TCP. B. Contractor must utilize this area due to the fact that the proposed builidng footprint will be lot line to lot line. C. Contractor must close sidewalk, parking lanes and travel lanes per the attached TCP in order to safely completion the construction activities.
Drill one 4-inch diameter boring in the street ROW to a maximum depth of 80 feet using a truck mounted drill rig. Work is for a geotechnical evaluation of site for a UT Office Building replacement.
The location is at 702 Colorado Street at the current location of the Colorado Building. This building was built in 1933. UT owns the building and will demolish it along with another 2-story building and a small parking garage for the new tower.
It will pretty much completely fill the middle portion of the photo.

Expected to be completed in 2017, the new building will be located on Seventh Street between Colorado and Lavaca streets, across from Ashbel Smith Hall, which houses the current board meeting room.
The project was first approved in 2012 with a project cost of more $102.4 million. The proposed design changes increases the number of floors from 15 to 19 and the total square footage from 258,500 to 342,200.
The building will be constructed according to commercial design standards with the intention that 30 percent of it will be leased to outside tenants and 70 percent will be used as open space.
Yeah, the massing is kind of clumsy, really, and the design looks like something out of the 80's. Can't say I was expecting this. I guess the good thing about it is that it at least fills the site if that's any consolation.
