it's bitterly ironic that the black lives matter movement in chicago indirectly lead to the additional deaths of hundreds and hundreds of more young black men.
This doesn't explain why the homicide increases were limited to Chicago and a couple of other cities. Other places had high profile killings of black residents, mass protest of policing, an a re-examination of excessive policing tactics, but didn't have the increase in violence.

it's entirely possible that cops in other cities didn't sit on their hands as much as CPD did in response to BLM.

as i said, it's not the most popular opinion around, but it's one that i think holds water based on observing the issue closely here in chicago.

you are free to disagree with it if you like. if you think you have a better theory for why homicides spiked +58% YOY in chicago in 2016, i'm sure the forum would like to hear it.

Actually, I think this is a pretty common scenario. After Cincinnati experienced race riots in 2001, the city experienced a steep rise is crime and homicides for the next few years before things settled back into the normal range. I think Baltimore experienced the same things following the Freddie Gray murder and acquittal.

I don't think it's fair to blame BLM as an organization, seeing how the Cincinnati story predates BLM by over a decade. But there is a historical trend of cops fucking up ---> community rises up in outrage ---> police feel demonized and take a hands off approach ---> homicides spike

Perhaps, but not likely.

I know in Baltimore there was a pronounced uptick in homicides after the Freddie Gray death. Prior to that the annual number of homicides was roughly in the mid 200s, but the following years have seen the annual number of over 300. The police were very leery of being involved in a situation where deadly force may be the result. Six officers were charged after Freddie Gray's death, but all charges were eventually dismissed or the officer's were found not guilty.

I think the potential for career ending (and possible prison time) made quite an imprint on most members of the police force.

Actually for 2.5 months, it is not that big of an increase. It is up a bit though.

Jackson Mississippi is at 21. With a population of only about 165,000, the rate would be higher than Baltimore or St. Louis.

Murder spike in Brooklyn; gang related:

Quote:
But in the first three months of this year, that trend took a concerning turn in the opposite direction, driven by a steep spike in murders in Brooklyn. As of March 24, the borough had recorded 28 homicides so far this year, compared with 17 in the same period last year, a 64 percent increase.

At the same time, police officials said murders citywide rose to 69 from 60, a 15 percent rise.

Chicago's first warm weekend of 2019 ends with 24 shootings and 5 murders

Quote:
It was the first warm weekend in Chicago, and just as feared, violence spiked, with 24 shootings across the city and five murders, police said.

The count began Friday at 6 p.m. and ran though Sunday.

In one incident, two children were among several people injured at a baby shower, Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. The children were in stable condition midday Monday.

[...]

In the same time frame last year, there were 18 shootings and four murders, police spokesman Michael Carroll said.

Causes of death:

Firearm: 5 (Norsborg, Tensta, Jakobsberg, Upplands Bro × 2)
Knife: 3 (Haninge, Täby, Solna)
Beating/Other: 2 (Märsta, Västertorp)
Unknown/unconfirmed: 4 (Södertälje, Tyresö x2, Tensta).

Malmö, known for being the "murder capital per capita" in Scandinavia (based on Scandinavian averages of course) has not had a single confirmed homicide yet, thankfully!
Greater Stockholm (pop 2.3 mil) is now at around 17 confirmed and 4 or 5 unknown/unconfirmed.

9 caused by firearms.

Columbus is at 28. Looks like it has slowed down a bit with about 7 in the past month or so.
