? - I'm not able to locate a land area that has been published for Montreal's Pierre Trudeau Airport. I am also not able to find 2019 aircraft movement data for Nashville International. I left placeholders in case someone has those numbers.

I've never heard of people analyzing passenger count per sq mile of airport land area. What useful information does such a figure actually reveal? It's not like DIA has developed all, or even most, of the 54 sq miles it owns. I guess looking at airport land area reveals which airports are the most constrained by proximate development, but not sure what the 'per capita' metrics tell us.

It says a lot about land efficiency.

I love cities that cram a lot into small spaces.

Not really. Denver International Airport could own 54 sq miles of land, but have all operations contained in 5 sq miles, with the rest being undeveloped open space. Not saying that is the case, just that it could be given the information presented. Looking at how much space an airport actually uses would reveal info on land efficiency. Simply looking at how much is owned does not.

I'm guessing it's based on the administrative boundaries the airports use? I wonder what the size of the developed land (like tarmac and such) is as well as what's under it .

Interestingly, MDW actually sees FAR fewer regional jets (both in absolutes and as a percentage) compared to ORD.

Southwest runs like 90% of all flights into/out of MDW, and they don't have any RJ's in their fleet; they are 100% 737. So that's pretty much all you ever see there, save for the occasional A320 from Frontier, Allegiant, or Volaris. Delta Connection (E175's) and Porter (Dash-8's) are the only airlines that fly RJ's into MDW, and we're only talking like a dozen or so flights/day total.

ORD, on the other hand, is a major dual hub for both United and American, and every day they funnel hundreds of RJ's into ORD from God only knows how many small cities spread across the interior of the nation.

so between the two, it's actually ORD that gets the boost in aircraft movements from loads of smaller planes.

There is very little under airports in the US, except, of course, Denver, where they have, you know, that Reptilian lair.

Rudimentary tracing of the YUL (Montreal airport) area suggests approximately 4.02 square miles.

Also, some of these airports, like LAX, MIA and ORD, are MAJOR cargo airports in addition to being MAJOR passenger airports, and thus get an aircraft movement boost from their cargo flights relative to airports that are more singularly oriented (relatively speaking) to just commercial passenger traffic.

Interesting that approach of passengers density.

Out of curiosity I checked São Paulo Congonhas: 22 million passengers in 2023 and a 0.618 sq mi area. 35.6 million pax/sqm. A good lead over La Guardia and might have a good chance to be the world’s busiest by that metric. I don’t know.

Last month their admin announced plans to build another terminal and they expect to reach 28 million passengers, mostly by allowing A321, that apparently is slightly bigger than the A320 and B737 that have the monopoly today.

Nashville's aircraft movements per square mile came to: 38,664

That's just per wikipedia

EDIT: Those are 2023 numbers, and I'm just realizing the list is for 2019 numbers. So the 2019 figures are probably right there around Austin and St. Louis.

With enough money, DIA can build expansions all over, in green (sorry beige) fields if they want.

Smaller airports need to get very intricate to use every square inch to the best effect. It's a very different dynamic, and one I find fascinating.

Yeah, Congonhas is one of the few major airports in the world that covers a noticeably smaller area than LaGuardia, so I wouldn't be surprised if it is "busiest" in the world. LaGuardia is probably in the top 5 as well, if not second place.

Is Santos Dumont smaller than Congonhas? Dumont seems about as small, if not smaller than Congonhas, but I know it doesn't get as many passengers.

Just a comparison:
Miami International: 131 gates
Austin-Bergstrom: 34 gates

What is Austin using that space for ? Definitely has room to grow, which it absolutely needs to. That airport (Austin) is always packed whenever I am there which makes sense with only 1 terminal and 34 gates.

I was actually surprised by LaGuardia. It looks bigger on the GE than it actually is, maybe due so many runaways, something typical of US airports.

Yeah, it's half of the size: not even 1 km²: 833,703 m²; Congonhas is at 1,647,000 m² and much busier than Santos Dumont (22 mi vs 11 mi). And that will probably be SDU's peak as it's already cannibalizing Rio Galeão International (GIG) and they're trying to redirect flights there to keep it relevant. GIG massive, but idle and declining: only 7.9 million passengers in 2023.

Congonhas is more famous due that dive on the ocean of highrises, but Santos Dumont is actually more challenging. Runaway is way shorter and pilots must avoid Sugar Loaf when approaching or taking off.

LaGuardia only has two runways, but it has a number of taxiways. LGA rarely handles anything larger than an A321, but 757s land there occasionally, so the airport needs to have taxiways large enough to accommodate. Donald Trump stored his personal 757 at LaGuardia up until he left office, so it was common to see it sitting on a taxiway if you were flying in or out of the airport any time before early 2021.

Yeah, I've flown into Santos Dumont before and also done plane watching from Sugar Loaf. Sugar Loaf is awesome because it's one of the few places in the world where you can plane watch from high above the plane.

It looks like they could add several 2,000'-long concourses in an Atlanta-like format between the two runways. There's an extravagant amount of land for it.

All the ancillary stuff seems to take multiples of the land is needs, and even with that there are vast unused areas.

Los Angeles International Airport: 4.6 square miles

SFO is almost twice as big as LAX? there's not much room to expand in SFO. This doesn't make sense, LAX seems much bigger and better runway configuration.
