I'm just pipe dreaming whit. Seems Ithaca needs at least one signature tall downtown to compliment the twins at IC and the McGraw at CU.

Here's some articles about:
1. small cities conference
http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...610020324/1002

2. Uphill bike race (for fun) - hey Vis, this is the winding street we drove down
http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...610020326/1002

3. Apple festival held downtown, yeah there's orchards around Ithaca
http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...610020328/1002

Now for some not so good news - My brother still lives in the hood on South Plain street(one of the streets we visited Vis):

http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...610030337/1002

Another example of how Ithaca is losing its "Ithaca is Gorges" luster in some ways.

Here's a couple of pics I found on the net (from Our Pilot on Flickr). Taken during the Apple Festival in downtown Ithaca:

provided the view in the next 2 pics

and is this a double bow?

Actually, that picture from near Cornell doesn't surprise me. It pro'bly comes from the student ghetto area.

And Ex, if anyone wants to be ride a bike on that hill, they must be out of their minds.

And whit, we have to be careful, nine floors in a new building might give the local NIMBYs heart attacks. At 12 fllors, we'd be stuck paying for their funerals.

^ Actually it's Ithaca Guns old factory, but it could pass for parts of C-town.
I'd ride a bike DOWN the hill.

Ah, okay. I just figured it was between some of those lovely houses over in C-town they're trying to save, 320 Dryden likely among them.

Ex, if you bike down that hill, I hope you have some really good brakes on the bike you use. Meanwhile, I'll just stand on the side, preferably with a video camera. I quote a fellow Cornellian when I say "Ithaca is gorges, but the hills are a bitch."

No big deal Vis. I use to skateboard down Buffalo Street on a small red board with METAL wheels. A little stone would send ya flying. Used up lots of bactine and band-aids.

That's not the only one around the area (Apple festival). Brooktondale's is coming up in a couple of weeks (no ferris wheel and VW bug police car, though

It could be built, you'd just have to factor in the extra year or 4 into your budget when planning the project. Besides, it's not like I'd be advocating a 15 story tower for senior citizens at the edge of a residential neighborhood (oops, that's already happened).

I guess this is good news for Ithaca's tourism industry:

http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...610050335/1002

May not sound like a big number, but for a small city it'll work.

Hey, just remember, with each hotel comes:

-jobs
-tax revenue
-development

And those three aspects are something Ithaca and upstate cities need in order to be vibrant (or in Ithaca's case, stay vibrant.)

Hey, Ex, I came across some old Ithaca photos yesterdays and noticed that there was a YMCA where the Community Bank building stands today. apparently, it was destroyed by arson in 1978. Any memories of the old structure?

I sure do remember that rascal. It had a small pool too, but we still went to the gorges (Teagle in the winter). Kind of an old imposing brick building. Walked by it quite often when I was attending Dewitt Junior High (it's the DeWitt mall building now).

Hey Vis, there's a disturbing story about Dryden on the News10Now site. For such a nice looking little burg, there's some bad history in the last 30 years.

A spot of good news for Inlet Island development:

http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...610060341/1002

I hope they don't shorten this one, the hotel/condos will only be 5 stories. Maybe it can go higher and use a smaller footprint.

Yes, those were very troubling times. I remember the murder of that family not because I remember it directly (it was 1990, and I was hardly a toddler) but because of a huge mess afterwards with the man they arrested and charged with the crime. Very, very sad times.

Ex, we know that there are about 100 hotel rooms for the proposed hotel, but how many condos are included in the five-storey building, and what is target market price-wise?
