This is kind of what I was trying to say in my long rambling post above.
Well, that is exactly what happened in Norfolk. For years, the metro area was named with Norfolk as the primary city. However, Va Beach surpassed Norfolk in population, and now the MSA is Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, even though VB is no more than an overly inflated suburb without a core DT/CBD.

In fact, Chesapeake, another huge suburb, is about to overtake Norfolk in population (it has already surpassed Newport News). I guess the new name will be Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk.

How about septuplet cities?

Virginia's "Seven Cities" metro: Norfolk / Virginia Beach / Portsmouth / Chesapeake / Suffolk / Newport News / Hampton

As expected, people fail to understand the concept "twin."

Buckhead lies just within the northern city limits of Atlanta; however, it acts as its own entity with an urban core (packed with highrises, hotels, nightclubs, and highend retail) and an estimated 100,000+ residents (similar to Bellevue). The City of Atlanta would never let it go (become its own city) without a fight since the area is so affluent. In conclusion, if Buckhead had its own city limits, then it would be a nice complement/twin to Atlanta.

Minneapolis-St Paul is commonly referred to as the Twin Cities. Dallas-Fort Worth is commonly referred to as the Metroplex.

Winston-Salem is known as "The Twin City" as it was once the two separate cities of Salem (founded 1766) and Winston (founded 1849). The two cities were consolidated in 1913 to form the city of Winston-Salem. The downtown area is where Winston was located, and about 1/2 mile to the east is the restored Old Salem district.

To be twins I would suggest two cities should have to be in a contiguous built-up area in close proximity together (meaning Milwaukee-Chicago is out) and both cities should have to have a proper downtown core (meaning Denver-Aurora is out. I'd also suggest that "twins" suggests the cities should share some similarity in population and importance, meaning the likes of NY-Jersey City, Detroit-Windsor (and I'll even throw in Ottawa-Gatineau) should be out. I'd even suggest San Fran-Oakland are a stretch, no slight towards Oakland but San Fran is one of the USA's most important cities. Just my 2 cents.

I really like Minneapolis-St. Paul, so they get my vote. The twin Cities seem to have stronger downtowns than Tampa-St. Petes and DFW.

Never really looked at San Diego - Tijuana before, but I've never really cared for twin cities except for the name sake Minn.-SaintP.

Heres a doozy...Montreal-Ottawa OR...OR...Montreal-Quebec City. At times like this, I wish the Nordiques were still in the NHL...For the record, Toronto is the older twin who gets first dibs while Hamilton is the younger, cuter twin but with a curfew

Greensboro, NC and Winston-Salem, NC would probably come the closest to being twin cities in a literal sense, since they are practically the same size.

Kansas City, MO- Kansas City, KS. Used to go to a "twin city tavern" located on state line road, and run back and forth across the street with beverage. There used to be prohibition era clubs "in the day" which had a line down the middle, story goes that patrons would cross the line into the other state when the fuzz would show up.
