Agreed. Then again that's true of any masterpiece by a truly great architect. I still can never get over Habitat '67. Alas I digress...

Oh, and this is our current Central Library at Laurier and Metcalfe, in the middle of the CBD.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottaw...yees-1.5007086

It replaced the beautiful old Carnegie Library in 1973.

The more I look at it the less I like the interior. It looks very dated. Like they tried to do the wood atrium thing in the Calgary library's central lobby but just applied it to a 90's design. Also the support columns holding up the ceiling remind me of an airport. Feels very mediocre for a 'signature' library.

I agree, everything reminds me of Pearson Airport. I love the outside however.

Lol! I immediately felt panicked like I had to run to a connector flight at the opposite end of the terminal with 5 minutes to spare.

And god forbid you leave your travel mug at A&W like I did and have to run back to A&W and than run back to the Terminal.

EDIT: I'm starting to get A&W Canada ads now!

Great thread.

Toronto's libraries are just about the best thing in the city. More than 100 local libraries, all different in look and feel, plus the reference library in a league of its own.

The new Calgary library is the best new library in the country, and world-class in every respect.

I absolutely love the Vancouver Public Library. When it opened in 1995 and they had 5 or 6 million books to move from the old main branch to the new one, the VPL invited the public to help out in what they called "Operation Bookworm". One showed up at the old main branch and were given a t-shirt and handed as many bags of books as you could carry. The City had closed the streets leading from the old branch to the new and it was basically a big parade. Tens of thousands of people came out and physically carried the millions of books and got to explore the new (empty) library, all in one beautiful sunny day.

Here are some great pictures of the library. The first, taken during construction, illustrates how at its core the library part of the project is a conventional concrete box.

Source

The second, a modern aerial illustrating the often-overlooked flying buttress-eque eastern side.

Source

The third is the atrium, which is always lively and honestly feels like a plaza. And in the great foresight of the architects, the library part is thoughtfully isolated with thick glass walls so the sound of the plaza doesn't penetrate the stacks and to allow for climate control within the library.

Source

Last is the fantastic new rooftop public space. The library has had a green roof since day one, but the top floor of the library, through which one accesses the roof, had been leased to the Feds since day one and is part of the immigration courts that are based in the office tower part of the library. Without knowing the exact details, the VPL elected not to renew the lease for the top floor and, instead, renovated it to be incorporated as part of the library and this new access meant the public could finally use the roof that sold so many people on the design back in the 1990s when the City held a design competition and let the public pick the winner (Safdie's design, by a landslide).

Source

It just fits so well into the fabric of the city, despite architecturally being so wildly different. (Last photo, I promise)

I love the Vancouver Library, I personally was there after my visit to Seattle last year and heavily enjoyed it!

The TRL is my favourite place to spend an afternoon in Toronto. I used to practically live in the Vancouver library: it sucks being homeless.

One thing I really like about the Halifax Central Library is that it was designed from the beginning to integrate the day's technology to offer opportunities that might not otherwise be available to the public. The library has a fairly well-equipped recording studio that anyone can use for free to record and edit music or things like podcasts, as well as a green screen for film and video shoots, and 3D printers. Recently they've also set up little "light therapy" stations which seem to be well-used. Several of the meeting rooms have kitchenettes and so they can also offer cooking classes there. Do the other major libraries have stuff like this as well?
