Oh no! A news story is reporting that the commission "wants to study the exterior design before work begins".

They probably want it to look more like this:

from mysa's downtown blog

They probably want it to look like everything else around there and make it look vacant.

Actually, the pdf details what they want to look at and that's the street level appearance and the street level appearance only.

The article did say the commission "supports" the basic design, at least that what I gathered from reading it. As SKW indicated, it may only be certain details they want to hash over. Hopefully its nothing that will delay construction to any appreciable degree.

They better not get rid of the lights that will illuminated at night! Hopefully Oldmanshirt is right about the construction time.

every single time i see that building, i get upset.

surely, the street level stuff will be approved. a varied streetscape is vital to urban health.

skyline

This building will blend into the skyline, but I was just wondering would the AT&T building block the view because it's in front of the Maverick building? Maybe not because it will be 200 feet tall, but I think that our skyline needs atleast 2,or 3 tall buildings then it's set unless they want to build more than that. That would be fine.

In today's paper..

http://www.mysanantonio.com/business...t_evolves.html

"Alamo City Hotels also owns the former Tawil's novelty store, which, along with two other neighbors, will be torn down and rebuilt as a 15-story, 133-room Aloft hotel that could take two years to open, depending on financing."

yeah... it's kinda blah. only thing nice is the signage and probably the inside, but the outside is not too impressive.

^^^Not really surprising given its location. How many nicely designed hotels are there outside of a CBD?

What gets me is that there's so many chain hotels in downtown that look like they belong near the airport or SeaWorld. Lookin at you, Staybridge and Radisson

The downtown Holiday Inn Express looks pretty cool, though.

^^^ Yeah I like that one, what needs to go are the two story hotels by 37/Houston area. Residential would be an awesome addition there.

I too don't really like the Aloft by Northstar, but like the lighting at night though.

In related news the other 2 aloft hotels planned for the city (Stone Oak & La Cantera) appear to have been scraped. They are no longer listed on the website.

http://www.starwoodhotels.com/alofth...els/index.html

The Park North aloft has already opened and the downtown aloft proposes a 2011 opening.

Any word on why this hotel and the other two alofts were canceled/indefinitely postponed?

Financing issues perhaps?

More than likely it's on hold since the current environment is not so good for the hotel industry.

Well it seems as if the Embassy Suites is finishing up for a late Summer opening, Indigo at Alamo Plaza is doing well since it's opening, Towneplace Suites will open later this year and the Kress Building facade is being worked on for Texas de Brazil. As if all of that wasn't good enough for now, it seems that the proposed Aloft has come back to life in the form of an agreement for leased sidewalk space for valet parking. Its on the council agenda this week.
