That's a very OK midcentury building in need of a reclad or deep clean. This, to me, is fundamentally no different from a beautiful old Victorian warehouse that needs renovation.

Yeah, the only problems are it’s very visible and has needed a reclad for the past 15 years...

Speaking of Prisonlike University Buildings I nominate the Schmon Tower from Brock University.

It even has ugly art to “make it look happier”.

Even otherwise beautiful universities like UBC, Western, and McGill have horrible concrete piles. I work in one. The only saving grace is that when I look out of my corner window, I don't have to see it.

Yeah University Of Toronto has the, Graduate House, The Athletic Center, and the Wolfond Center. Otherwise it’s an amazing looking campus. The Wolfond Center in particular looks like they tried to slam to many details into a tiny package.

Big Universities are more likely to experiment with architectural trends. On the whole this is a good thing I think, but can also lead to “what the hell were they thinking” in certain cases. I’m glad we ended up with polarizing buildings like Robarts instead of playing if safe.

If we are going to talk ugly university architecture Waterloo reigns. Here is a post I made a while back with a couple highlights.

Nor do they need natural light
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4721...!7i8192!8i4096

The area around University of Waterloo is most likely one of my least favorite areas in Ontario.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4714...7i13312!8i6656

Seriously this place is a gold mine.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4724...7i13312!8i6656

Its the Laval of Ontario
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4736...7i13312!8i6656

Eyesore after eyesore

Fugly after Fugly
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4679...7i13312!8i6656

Giant Jail.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4747...7i13312!8i6656

This place is called a village on google maps.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4692...7i13312!8i6656

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4704...7i13312!8i6656

Heres another village
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4714...7i13312!8i6656

Heres the Library. Its big. thats a bad thing.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4722...7i13312!8i6656

The Public Library aint a modernist gem either
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4656...7i13312!8i6656

Imagine working in this tower.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4658...7i13312!8i6656

Waterloo becomes more fugly every year it seems.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4724...7i13312!8i6656

Seriously this city is one big student housing complex.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4804...7i13312!8i6656

And not a particularly nice one at that.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4792...7i13312!8i6656

The University is also not that nice.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4729...7i13312!8i6656

The City Science Museum
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4721...7i13312!8i6656

So many windows.
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4603...7i13312!8i6656

Russia would be proud
https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4783...7i13312!8i6656

Now that I have significantly singed your eyes out I am going to finish with the Waterloo University Visitors Center. Does it not just ooze welcoming?

Reminds me of the Arts department at U of C. I had a hard time finding my first drawing class as it listed the location as the Arts parkade. I thought there had to be a mistake. It turns out the Arts department is situated on top of the parkade. Depressing AF. Could the U of C give less of a shit than that? They literally shoved it on top of a parkade in a windswept corner of the campus.

Ryerson University Library is very ugly. It’s also pretty visible in the area it is in (near Dundas Sqaure).
